Reflecting back to my youth, it must have been the Helter Skelter cassette packs which began my love for dance music.
My romance developed further in the local nightclub-Reflections, Westbury. I found myself prefering to be in the commercial/trance room on my own (where Galaxy 101 would often play)and dance like crazy with randoms, rather than being in the R&B room with my school mates. Sounds a little gay, but it is indeed the truth!! However, the music here did not satisfy my needs........... I was hungry for something harder!! I researched..........
As soon as I passed my driving test at 17, I got in my metro with four of my best mates and hit the road driving down to Bournemouth to the Opera House, home of Slinky. Then the true romance blossomed, and became a regular.
I met more and more people who had the same passion as me, particularly 'Pete Wez' who loved to go clubbing as much as me. He would often do me mixes with tunes from Cortina and I particularly remember Vincent de Moor: Fly away. Indeed Pete you still owe me that Mixing lesson!
At 18 I did many a road trip to get to the big clubs, for example: Frantic in London and Cream at the Nation in Liverpool. I remember being so proud of my cream logo tattoo when going there, only to realise every other bugger had one!! When finishing my A levels, me and a few gals checked out the clubbing capital: Ibiza popping to Manumission at Priviledge, Es Paradise, Amnesia, Space, Pasha, Eden etc. I moved to Southampton on returning from the clubbing isle for university at Southampton, even closer to Slinky Bournemouth. Gutted it is no longer held in the Opera House :(
Still now I love to go out clubbing, but am finding myself becoming annoyed that some of the orginal nights which introduced trance/hard dance are appealing to a wider audience and are mixing in indie tracks such as the Automatic 'is that a monster' and Snow patrol. It makes my blood boil!!!! Thank god for Lakota!! With a huge pat on the back to Nick W (Fish) for providing a venue/club night (Nyce1) to hear the music which I love in the way which it was meant to be heard- Loud, Fast, Banging, uplifting and boshable! No commercial shite!! Indeed it is a place where some of the old tunes can come out of the old record box to recieve their true title as musical masterpieces!
See you all on the dancefloor!!!!
