Hi, I have djing for a while now but have not had chance to get out to play due to work(booh!) Well, i had my resurrection gig in Shoreditch at Electrotek in 2007 and it went down really very, so watch this space for my productions!
I am a very deep and dirty prog house/tech house dj. The likes of Digweed and Sasha are my influences! If you ever want me to play, give me a shout!
My biography:
Some of you may have already heard of me but for those who have not, I am Ses Memhi, very much part of the new flourishing nucleus of up and coming djs.
Background
I first started to learn about the world of djing at university back in 1998. A very good friend of mine taught me how “Beat Match” and about the technical side of how music is constructed and left me to mix two records continuously until my ear finally picked up when a record is and is not matching. It was an arduous process but a fantastic way to learn and a very much grass roots way of developing. Since then, I haven’t looked back.
Believe it or not, I actually trained to be a barrister and embarked on a career in tax, (and before you ask, no I don’t work for the government). However, my love for music never subsided. I always kept my ear to the ground and was aware of industry movements and developments.
Music Background
Being an 80’s child and growing up in the 90’s, electronic music was always going to be a major part of my up bringing esp. as my cousin was a dj himself. Bands, groups etc that had influenced me back then were Left Field, New Order, SL2, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Prodigy, INXS, U2, Danny Tengalia and anything that had a synthesiser as part of its of its main groove.
In the 90’s, Prodigy was a massive influence, along with SL2 and to this day “On a ragga Tip” is one of my all time favourites. I loved rave, which actually led to me liking Jungle! However, that was short lived! I also admired bands such as Oasis, Pulp, Supergrass and other Indie bands.
At university, I started out with Trance, mainly Euro trance. I soon started to get bored so my best friend introduced me to Northern Exposure 3 and the mixing of the geniuses formerly known as Sasha and John Digweed. That was it, I had a, what felt like, a religious movement and was converted! Progressive House was the way forward for me and has stuck with me for the last 9 years.
Style Wise, Sasha and Diggers are my biggest musical influences. I admired them both for their technical mixing capabilities and timeless records they play. Being a bit of a nerd myself, I was in my element.
If I had to pick, my style is more Digweed. I play deep and dark “grooved mastered” tracks. I still play progressive house, but also a lot of tech-house, which has developed a lot since the late 90’s. The odd Techno track makes an appearance too!
The clubbing scene is a major part of my life esp. as it provides me with an idea of what djs are playing, Past and Present, I frequent nights/clubs like Golden, Renaissance, Gatecrasher, Home, Fabric, The End, Harlem Nights, Turnmills, The Key, Egg, Bedrock and many dance festivals. I also go to many live band gigs at the likes of Brixton Academy.
Current Endeavours
After concentrating on my career for many many years, I have been pushing myself as a dj with the view of producing. I did a few gigs at university, most notably at the same club as the likes Sasha, Diggers, Carl Cox, Steve Lawler, Pete Tong etc have played.
Since November 07, my djing career has taken off. I dj’ed at a night called Electrotek in Shoreditch and have played out many times since then. I’ve also started to learn how produce, which is a very slow process! I will get a track out though.
If you like Digweed then you will like me. Friends actually refer to me as “Mini Digweed” which is great for me. My sets are full of musical colour, groove mastered baselines and variety. My key traits are that I am very much a technical dj and I always have brilliant opening tracks which takes me some time to pick! I hope to never disappoint.
So that you get a feel for the type of stuff I am playing, my current favourite producers are: Dusty Kid, Gui Boratto, Guy J,Robert Babicz, Audio Fly, Radio Slave, Popof, Nick Muir, Pryda, Paul Woolford, Booka Shade, Kaliber, Tiefschwartz, M.A.N.D.Y, Dubfire,Minilogue, Adam K, Oxia, Satoshi Tomiie and many more.
In conclusion, I hope to have longevity in this industry and would love for you to come and see me play. My past and future gigs are as follows:
