A Rough Guide To Rogue

Chris Taylor started amateur DJing in 2005 when a flatmate suggested playing indie, rock and pop at the local Union bar. That night, The Rosebery Rogues, based on the name of their university home road, were born and were instantly an overnight success; offered to launch a club night on their second-ever gig. Entertainment staff from Rohampton University snapped up the boys to launch Boom! at the Putney Fez club where the Rogues played alongside The Fun Lovin’ Criminals’ Huey, and the finest upcoming indie local talent.

After the Fez moved venues, the Rogues were soon to find a new home at Kingston’s Bacchus club, the most popular alternative venue in town. They were given the responsibility of hosting Planet Of Sound, the club’s longest and most commercially successful night of indie, rock and roll across the ages. This included supporting Hawkwind legend Nik Turner(!) and The Trudy. Also inviting the Portsmouth heroes formerly known as Rolling Dog along for the ride. Soon, Chris’ musical taste was reinvigorated by his interest in electro rock crossover acts such as The Faint, The Infadels and Goose. This lead to the launch of his first night, Tripswitch at Bacchus, and also served the community’s interest in this new genre introducing some new DJs to the scene along the way. Another club launch beckoned the Rogues at New Slang, arguably the most respected and important night in the South London area introducing more high profile bands through the use of the Banquet Records shop and record label. Kingston’s second largest capacity club, The Works, hosted the night.

Numerous and varied appearances took Chris to the prestigious 93 Feet East in London, the multi-million pound Oceana and smaller pubs, clubs and university parties in greater London before returning home after graduating in summer 2007.

Under the Rogue pseudonyms, Chris has played in excess of 100 gigs to date.

The Rogue State

After convincing friends, Rich Thomas and Mike Lumsden (The Cubists), that a DJ night in Portsmouth was all well within our ability and a positive thing for the area, Error was born and Chris became the Rogue State acting as a solo DJ under his own steam. The name was spawned due to Chris’ unpredictable, rebellious and partying attitude encompassing all previous genres of musical interest in his sets. This also saw his move to using Ableton Live on a laptop as a preference to CDs.

In October 2007, Error made its debut upstairs at the Venus Vodka Bar and received a warm reception from the veteran clubbers of Portsmouth. Booking some of the south’s finest guest DJs along the way, Error now has a new home in the quintessential Drift bar of Southsea.

Electronica/Breaks/Bootlegs/Rock/Electro-House/Tech-House /Rave. Anything can and will happen in a Rogue State set! Notably, ‘blog house’ has become a huge influence upon Chris when selecting music for a show. By getting to know and support unknown acts before they hit the mainstream, there will always be unconventional remixes and productions as never heard before debuting a Rogue set.
