Lost City Nights, a bar somewhere in Farringdon, Friday 11th March 2005

The first Friday Lost City Night away from its birthplace of Sub Logic ended up being a free party with requests for donations to charity, which ultimately contributed to its success, if not to the pockets of the promoters. But it all goes to show which of those are in it for the fun of organising kick-arse parties and not for the money.

The new venue worked well as a location, the decks set up on the end of the long bar stretching through the middle of the downstairs room, but a kind of DJ booth being created by two large cushions supporting the CD decks, with a large monitor speaker at the end, and a mini lighting rig behind (many thanks to Andrew for the lights, it wouldn't have been the same without them!). UV banners glowing on the wall gave the night some sense of identity.
This area formed the focal point of the dancing, but with several other areas of comfy seating, the crowd was nicely spread around the bar. A good progression from Sub Logic, it fitted in well with the Lost City vibe.

As the last LCN party in Sub Logic, the resident DJs Simon Ross and Justin Marshall were joined by Anil Chawla of Mongo Bongo and co-promoter Mark Sun from it would be rude not to, this time the four playing back to back all night, spinning a handful of tunes each before passing the baton on to the next DJ. A large part of the crowd was made up of the IWBRNT faithful (all wearing their matching T-shirts!) and loyal LCN followers, but that didn't even count for half the turnout. The pre-Fabric crowd warmed up the seats early on, then the late-night bar crowd were lured from upstairs, by the good music, the scrapping of the cover charge, and the promise of Mixmag future hero Anil playing the tunes that he has been getting aired on Radio 1!

Thanks to everyone who came, to the DJs who played for free and to the people who donated to Comic Relief, but no thanks to the bar, Ember, who seemed to think that a really good night and a packed bar wasn't good enough and still stung the promoters for a hefty charge at the end of the night. Some bars seem intent on making money at any cost and don't want to help promoters run a successful night (like how come we were competing with the upstairs bar, especially after scrapping the admission charge?). Lost City Nights will grow from this, but will not be putting a night on at Ember again, and we seriously suggest that you don't either.
