Richie Hawtin = Douchebag!

Some interesting comments here... and i do sort of agree with this "throwing yourself a series of masturbatory self-congratulatory parties booking only the already over-exposed artists you sign to your label?"

it is true, it does seem self indulgent, and the cube idea is very corny in my opinion, what happened to it being about the music?

me and the missus were 'discussing' (read as arguing) the whole concept only a few days ago, one thing for sure is that he'll certaintly be going down the mass marketing route, what with all the brand backing and subscription shizzle. lets just hope the experience refletcs in all this extra obtained cash flow.

tis true the good thing about all this is i'm sure the contakt parties will be absolutely amazing and lets face it if you can find and excuse to have a party then why the f*ck not.

just maybe they should have gone about it in a slightly less "look at me, look at me" way.....

Negativity is it really needed? Are they shit parties? are they shit artists/ djs?

No

Fair enough, some people see it as he hasn't really come up with much of his own productions since the Plastikman era.

May i mention an excellent tune, The Tunnel!

I wasn't into techno 10 years ago so i can't say too much of that period of time, but i know the scene has changed so much since then, techno is appealing to different crowds. Maybe some of the people who were really into his stuff back then don't really appreciate the sounds M-nus have been churning out over the past few years. Completely different styles.

This is what Hawtin has been concentrating on, other artists not himself!

Gaiser, Troy Pierce, Ambivalent, Hearthrob, Barem are just some of the producers that have made consistently good productions that is if dark minimal techno appeals to you.

Also as a dj Hawtin has been at the majority of big festivals and touring the world constantly for a long time.

Not forgetting the time he spends working with music technolgy helping to push things forward.

If all that ain't a reason to celebrate the past 10 years then what is?

Yeah the cube probably ain't what its hyped up to be but its just an added gimmick for the future events. Lets face it he's hardly using the cube to pull crowds, all the events will be guaranteed sell outs as it is!

booking only the already over-exposed artists you sign to your label?

Sorry but isn't that the whole point of a label party?

Fucking thick cunt who wrote that!

I know lets throw our label party and book a load of local djs from each city we do it in or maybe book one of those producers who sent us a promo cd that we weren't really into.

Never gonna happen!

i agree with everything you said and although i said it seems self indulgent, I also think that if you cant celebrate a label which has been one of the most successful labels in the woirld for 10 year what the fuck can you celebrate.

But the cube, like you said it is a gimmick......why do they need a gimmick, why not just say they have a set-up where you can text and email the artists?

Is designed to attract more people....people that wouldnt normally go........people that dont really appreciate techno as much?

Is it Richie Hawtin's idea or some bright spark accountant?

I don't think Hawtin has taken the effect to his image this will have lightly. Each year they have a certain theme based around the artwork that goes with the releases. I'm thinking a lot of thought has gone into how the theme of the cube is going to fit into the musical style and the whole package of this years releases.

As Chris said he's just trying new things and maybe bringing a different experience to clubbing. Whether is works or not will stand the test of time with the Contakt touring.

I'm pretty much going to make sure i'm there at SEOne when it comes to London, Cube or no Cube

You've got to remember Hawtin's done loads of styles of parties over the years, in sound & concept. He's been there & done a lot more than most DJs. I've never really been that into his tunes that much but I've enjoyed loads of his dj/live sets.

He's always been the bloke who brings techno to new audiances since the Detroit days.

I prefer the ferice 909 charged sets he used to play back in the earler days but thats just my opinion. Hes always quality whether its your thing or not & he's one of the Djs that is always trying to push boundries.

The only different is he uses ableton for loops & effects instead of the hardware... he can do the same shit and more now.

I also dug out a mix from hawtin that must be at least 10 years old, unfortunatly it's not tagged but the techno on that is proper hard as nails. definetly not we've grown to expect from the plastikman. This stuff is more for Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke appitites amongst us, still stinks of quality though.

instead of moaning and saying he's not as good as 10 years ago, how about embracing the future. Would you want to play the same music for 10 years. I think it would drive you insane if you did
