Gary Beck Interview ahead of his set this Saturday @ Lost Souls
XI
This week Lost Souls spoke to special guest DJ, producer/ label head Gary Beck ahead of this Saturdays party and here's what was said...

Hello Gary, we at Lost Souls hope you are looking forward to your debut performance at Londons favourite toilet, Public Life this Saturday daytime 19th September.

Ahead of this weeks party we hope you wouldn't mind answering some questions we have prepared, so that all our Lost Souls regulars can find out little bit more about yourself.

"Yeah cool, no worries."

1) Your no stranger to us at Lost Souls since you first played for us, last year at our party at Herbal. After a year of keeping in touch, we've finally organised for your long awaited first appearence at our weekly toilet residencey. What have you heard about Public Life?

"I was lucky enough to get a look at public life in full swing before I played herbal, and it looked amazing! Everyone just seemed to be having such a great time."

....................................................................

2) Your productions have been consistent and of the highest standard, one after the other with plenty in the pipeline. Your being highly rated by some of the worlds biggest faces in techno. How long have you been producing techno and what inspired you to make music?

"I have been making techno for about 5 years and I guess the main inspiration was watching guys like Slam & Funk d’void do their stuff at the Arches in Glasgow."

.....................................................................

3) You seem like quite a young guy as techno producers go, how old are you if you don't mind us asking?

"I’m 26 at the moment."

.....................................................................

4) Your born and raised in Glasgow, how is techno percieved in your hometown and what is your favourite club to play at there?

"Techno is pretty big in Glasgow however their should be more clubs in my opinion. The Arches and Sub Club are the best for me."

.....................................................................

5) What would we find if we where to come round to your place and look in your home studio?

"Most likely empty bottles of Jacobs Creek, along with a Mikrokorg, Roland RS70, Korg Elektribe ER-1, and lots of percussion stuff like bongos etc."

......................................................................

6) If Father Christmas really brought us all whatever we wanted what would you ask for as an addition to your studio set up?

"A Moog and Cheryl cole."

......................................................................

7) One of the most noticed highlights of your past year has to be the release of 'Consumed' on Richie Hawtin presents... Sound From Can Elles mix compilation, of which the tracks used were then released digitally on M_NUS. Can you tell us the story behind this and how the track came to be named after the notorious 1998 Plastikman album?

"I never knew at the time he had a track out called consumed, and I can’t for the life of me actually remember sending it to minus! I made the track almost a year before he started playing it. It was only when a friend pointed out he heard a track like consumed on a youtube video that I decided to check it out, and sure enough it was. I was considering binning the track as nobody had responded with interest in the track. It was around this time that Richie phoned and asked to sign it to minus."

......................................................................

8) You have recently launched your own imprint BEK-Audio, first release being the 'Over To You' EP which is out now on Beatport.com. Is this something you've been wanting to do for a while? What can we expect from the label and its sound?

"Yes, I’ve been wanting to do something for a while with a label. The direction will be tech/house or anything really that catches my ear! This could also see a couple of experimental downtempo tracks get some exposure too."

.....................................................................

9) Over the past few years you've had releases on many very well known labels such as, M_NUS, Underwater, Soma, Perc Trax, Edit-Select, Dekandent... the list goes on. Now you have your own imprint will you continue to release on some of these labels and what do you have coming out before the year is up?

"Yes, I will continue to release on other labels as well as my own. Coming up is an e.p on len faki’s figure, countless remixes! And some material on Edit Select."

......................................................................

Big thanks for sparing us some time out of your busy schedule to answer those questions, we are very much looking forward to your set at Public Life on Saturday afternoon.

"Looking forward to it, thanks."

Cool interview, shame I can't make this. Thinking of popping along to see him play at Mute @ Cable on Sunday night since it's free entry.
