so..... i'm in ljubljana. A place few know how to pronounce, and where even fewer can decipher the language.

but a place where they sure know how to throw a party.

After leaving everyone i was with at the fantastic hostel we stayed in, i jumped in a cab heading off to a club i knew nothing about, in a country i knew nobody in, and could not communicate a word to even if i had. And boy was i not disappointed.

My rather huge scepticisms of slovenian clubbing were thrown into disarray by the cab driver's insistence that klub lipa would go on until 8am with an after party across town until the next day. it didn't take me long to realise this was gonna be a mad one. and as the club started to fill out towards one am, it was plain for everyone to see.

The slovenian residents were great, with sets which would have impressed me in any larger London club. Songs generally belonged to the funky house genre, with some deeper house and a bit of trance thrown in for good measure (after all this is Europe). And speaking of which, only Europe would be playing a trance version of "sweet child of mine"....

However things really spiced up when English/northerner/Italian(...) DJs MYNC PROJECT took over the decks. The crowd were loving it. With regular races to the podiums for classics such as strings of life(stronger on my own) -defected, and a great remix of finally, as well as too many others to even try and remember, my body REFUSED to stop moving in a scarily erratic manner throughout their set. Every time i wanted to relieve my aching limbs, soothe my parched throat, maybe even get to that elusive toilet cubicle that only ever seemed to have a minimum of 2 runny-nosed girls emerging from it, the bastards put on another classic to keep me planted to the podium like an ATTENTION SEEKER. With a cool mix of funky beats and slithers of vocals to keep those spirits moving higher and higher, the boys certainly made an impression on slovenia. And the soles of my feet.

Following on was the much acclaimed resident ALEXSIJ, who turned it just a little trancey, with interesting takes on michael gray, the weekend, and that infamous sweet child of mine trance edition. An incredibly well respected DJ, he had the crowd really wrapped. one guy was hopping around shouting "ALEXSIJ ALEXSIJ *gurble gurble slovene language*" in my face persistently.

But as 8am neared, nick MYNC joined him for a mad dash for some wicked songs, including boys and girl blur funked up and a nice long go at Sander Kleinenberg ‘The Fruit’ (Little Mountain Recordings). There was some crazed support at the end for the great efforts of all the DJs, including an impressive but some might say life-threatening hand stand on the railing of the podium... And FINALLY, after 10 hours of raving, and daylight well installed, the nutters left the club for, i assume, the after party


HIGHLIGHT OF THE NIGHT : MYNC playing strings of life(stronger on my own) - defected and that feeling of completion as you enter clubbing heaven for a few minutes. dramatic but so true.

SOMEONE I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED BUT DIDN'T : mc URBANO, an odd addition to house music, who er mc'd in english throughout the night. Seem to remember him singing coldplay along to the clocks remix...

PLUS POINTS OF SLOVENIAN CLUBBING:
- they pass round the fattest strongest joints i've ever seen to anyone in sight
- the second you explain you can't speak a word of their language, they get even more interested in you and your country, and offer you drinks/cigarettes/a place to stay/to get you drugs from the car park without adding on a tourist tax.
- they are generally better dancers
- they look great
- the club is still full at 8am the next morning, and they are absolutely LOVING IT

FUTURE CLUBBING: i was told by some clubbers that there are EVEN BETTER nights near the coast on the beach. hopefully those that i met will use this site for sharing those with us.
