Aura is the bright new shiny pin on the Restaurant Mile, that ambiguous stretch of fast road from the turn off to San Juan to the San Carlos junction, on the San Juan road. It begins at Bambuddha Grove and continues past a dozen country restaurants of the highest and most diverse quality to be found, in the middle of nowhere, on the island.
Aura is about in the middle of the equation - in the premises of an age old island institution that we all knew as Can Fly. Fortunately Aura has maintained the quirkiness that we all recall from Can Fly by being something of a chameleon depending upon the time of day.
It begins the evening as a laid back chillout lounge offering rather exceptional food at very reasonable prices to your restaurant table, or to your leather settee in the bar/lounge section depending upon how comfortable you look. If you're lucky enough to grab one of these latter, luxurious dining situations you get the best of the impressive DJ output at the far end of the bar, a pretty waitress crushing ice for the cocktails in the foreground and a view through the serving hatches of the hyperactive, but ruthlessly efficient, kitchen staff at the chopping board or supervising the inferno of the grill. Turn the other way and you have a vista through the arches overlooking the contented diners filling the tables and terrace.
In addition to the main areas 'Aura' has a large barn space which has been converted into a gallery and made available for island artists to display their work.
A seriously different venue with (dare I say it?) an 'aura' all of its own. Inside you could be in a centrally heated version of the coolest chic that London has to offer - outside you're counting stars as the flavours of the food, prepared by chef Damien Coutts, ricochet around your pallet.
Throughout the winter, whilst they take over this side of the island for the duration, they'll be offering a 'menu del dia' too 12:30 – 4:30 pm for 9,50 euro. This, of course, will not be your average ‘menu'. It will maintain the same high standard of cuisine and presentation, featuring dishes like Thai stuffed quail, Moroccan vegetable Lasagne and
Moussaka. They're also doing a long Sunday brunch where you'll find Eggs Benedict or Florentine alongside roast dinner and more, but with a culinary twist.
