Empathy On Its Summer Hols!
Top event! Bristol's most reliable house night decamped to the White Isle (not the Isle of Wight) for the week, and put on a full day's programme at the Orange Corner Bar in San Antonio - Didn't actually go in a big red double decker bus (tho saw one outside Amnesia).
Orange corner is a fine open plan bar very close to the egg, overlooking the bay and marina - perfect for sunset - and their very fine mojitos certainly contributed to the party ambience - which was chilled during the afternoon but messier once darkness fell.
Opened proceedings myself (thanks Stu!) with a minimal electro set with a few breaks thrown in - then Greg from Moochin' made things funkier.
Renny C played a bit tougher, followed by Dirty Blue resident Livell in party mood, then Empathy resident Jay Russell gave us some of his usual quality twisted electro house.
Dave K dropped some techno and some breakbeat booty fun, before Rennie and Jay returned to the decks as the Funky Sound Technicians - doing what it says on their tin!
As the sun started its downward trajectory to the horizon Mr Rob Worth stepped up to the steel wheels and had us dancing to his electro set, and then Empathy head honcho Stuart Wilkinson played the thing into the sea with a quality set of perfectly formed deep house anthems including a fine series of Tracey Thorn vocals - seems like she only lends herself to quality productions - as well as dropping Massive Attack's Bristolian classic "Teardrop" at the crucial sunset moment, and even making time for a burst of quality drum'n'bass.
Two of SSRadio's finest then played us an hour of upfront vocal house, and then, in the unique atmosphere of the Ibizan dusk - which always holds the promise of a full-on night ahead - things did indeed become full-on and messy as the dancefloor became more crowded for back - to back sets from Rob & Renny, and later from Stuart & Livell - not to mention another outing for Greg, and a proper dance-I-up-mr-goat-man set from Mr Wilkinson!
Rounding the night off a harder set from Mr Dave K left the whole place baying for more at closing time.
All in all one of the most successful outings for Empathy to date, and proof that the night can spread its (seagull) wings much further afield than BS1.
Highlights for me: Stu dropping Massive Attack; Greg dropping the Andy Cato mix of Francois Dubois; Dave dropping a nice breakbeat booty of Delerium's Ibiza classic from 2000 "Silence" - and of course Stu closing the night with Engelbert's Balearic anthem "Lesbian seagull" - which I'm sure will be heard at many Empathies to come.
