This article is about VORTEX vs Hardcore Revelation :: The Christmas Stomper @ Bang Bar in Basingstoke, Fri 11 Dec 2009
Imagine if you will for a minute a jam packed O2 Academy in Bournemouth bursting at the seams with UK hardcore ravers to a sell out crowd of thousands. There’s a steady roar from the raving massive as the subject of today’s interview belts out his trademark rhymes through a microphone.
Within a heartbeat, the rhymes that follow those already uttered, are echoed back to him from a frenzied gathering of revellers on the main dance floor and the two tiers above, most of whom are gallantly raving so hard to his crowd workings (and the DJ Gammer’s epic set), that you can’t see the back of the arena for an ocean of hands all out stretched valiantly curving their fingers into the shape of the infamous W that shows as a sign of support to his credit. Like a Preacher to a Pulpit, MC Whizzkid is in session and the proud gathering before him is his congregation… the W-Team.
For those that don’t know him, he’s been the ravers poet for some years now, a raver first, then DJ and now, professionally, the World’s finest hardcore MC bringing stage presence and rude boy cool to every arena stage he steps upon within the genre. His lyrics are a thing of legend, his work takes him all over the UK and abroad and not only has he appeared on just about every flyer you may well have on your wall for the past decade or so (including the likes of Slammin Vinyl, Hardcore Heaven, HTID, Fusion and Ravers Reunited), but he’s also managed a healthy career in recording tracks with the likes of Gammer, Kutski, Andy Whitby, Stylus & AudioJunkie, Technikal and countless other talented masters of the art form, therefore allowing work to be released through not only their respective labels but also some of the UK’s biggest selling, chart busting compilation albums. His record label with Stylus & AudioJunkie, Broken Records shows no sign of slowing in its originality and development of breakthrough talent and with a Terratag sponsorship firmly in place; he’s dressed well for the part too.
Fresh back from the Clubland Live tour, we grabbed the talented lyrical impresario for a brief, but to the point chat before he appears at this Friday’s Hardcore Revelation event at the Bang Bar, Basingstoke.
Hello G! How was the 'Clubland' Tour?
An amazing experience... I had a great time!
You had an opportunity to work with some fantastic artists and shining breakthrough talent did you not? Tell us of those experiences?
Very surreal working with people I normally see on TV, but I definitely made some good friends and everyone was there to represent what they did. I felt very proud to be repping hardcore.
How does a 'Clubland Live' event differ from your usual weekend manoeuvres at some of the UK’s finest raveries?
Oh, it’s totally different. The audience is a whole new kettle of fish, some had never even heard of hardcore, but I think Darren, Breeze and myself may have turned a few new ears to the sound we love.
'Clubland' events are known for their marginally younger crowds, do you feel that you’ve now contributed to bringing through the next generation of ravers through these tours? Did you get some new recruits to the W-Team?
I’d certainly like to think so. I also think the younger audiences are a lot more open minded towards music nowadays, than they were when I was that age.
Variety is the key, as I’ve always said; I think the next generation know that.
Speaking of which, I’ve noticed the 'W-Team' has got infinitely larger since we last spoke, there’s even a fair few famous folks involved! Care to share some light on that and for those that aren’t involved that want to be – how do they get on board?
(Chuckles)
Just check my Facebook fan page for details; I seem to be getting some cool fans of late... very strange! facebook.com
Your MC’ing Worldwide has now blessed you with the majority share of the public vote in winning the Hardcore Heaven ‘Best MC’ award for a second year running, you commented that it felt surreal and like a dream coming true all over again. Care to elaborate Sir?
I just do what I love doing, not for awards, but because I love it. Cliché I know... but very true, I’m not really a ‘winner of awards’ in life, so to have not one but two awards, is very peculiar! (Laughs)
It means the World to me to have fans… I can’t believe it!
You’ve been very busy recording too by the looks of it, with AWsum, the DJ Kutski, plus you’re on CD introducing the next instalment in the ravers bible Clubland X-Treme Hardcore 6. Is it safe to say your Diary is heavily stacked both day and night?
Yeah man loads on, both live and writing songs for lots of different genres of music. Living the dream!
What’s this I hear about a Whizzkid clothing label too? Any truth in those rumours?
Yup... dangerous looking garments on the horizon, keep your eyes peeled.
Broken Records is coming along with such strength, with a new website upcoming that MiDJe assures us is the dogs danglers, Stylus & AudioJunkie’s profiles ever growing with dates all over the UK and tireless studio sessions in full flow, is 2010 going to be the year of the Broken Record?
Certainly going to be big year release wise… and YES, you will be able to get digital releases. I seem to get asked that every week! (Laughs out loud).
You’re on for Hardcore Revelation this weekend, with aforementioned partners in crime Stylus & AudioJunkie headlining with you for what is ultimately a new, fresh and exciting brand I’ve found so far. What’s your advice to them moving forward for building the ultimate hardcore party?
Keep your line ups fresh, don’t overkill it all at once and remember it’s for the hardcore ravers... that way they will be fine!
I’m looking forward to Friday, big time! Good luck fellas and any ravers reading this, make sure you come and say hi!!
Thank you G, we respect and appreciate you did this with little notice so big up your chest! Feel free to leave us with web links, release dates, gig dates, mentions, plugs and other hardware items…
