Godskitchen catch up with ATB before his debut on 24th October

This article is about Godskitchen's Pimps & Whores Party @ Air in Birmingham (UK), Sat 24 Oct

ATB is a man that burst onto the scene with his infamous 9pm Til I Come track which shook dancefloors across the globe in the late 90's. Since then Andre has gone on to be recognised as one of the most in demand DJ's in the world, regularly selling 10's of thousands of tickets and performing to sold out stadiums around the world. We caught up with Andre recently for a little chat ahead of his Godskitchen debut.

Hey Andre, how’s things with you at the moment?
Awesome! It’s one week now that I’m on US tour and it’s absolutely incredible. Last week we were in Guatemala and Salvador. During the next three weeks we are going to cruise with a tour bus across the US, starting in San Francisco and than going over Dallas up to Chicago. I believe that we will have a great time. I´m also starting right now to work on my next Mix Compilation The DJ 5.

We’re really excited to have you come and make your debut for us in October, have you heard much about the club? What are you expecting?
I’m also excited. Unfortunately, I didn’t often have the opportunity to play in Great Britain during the last years but I always like to come back to the island. The people know how to celebrate good partys and of course I have heard about the club. It’s a great location and meeting point for the best DJs of the world. I am really glad to play there.

For those out there who may not be familiar with your style, what can the people expect to hear from you?
Well, let’s wait and see. I like to surprise the people and don’t want to be pigeonhole in a specific musical category. But if I have to summarise my sound I would say that you can find it somewhere between Trance and Progressive. It´s electronic dancemusic with a lot of melodies and emotions!

At GlobalGathering UK in 2008 you played the original version of Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit, do you often like to drop something different into your sets to help you stand out?
Laugh. Yes, I love such small outbreaks in my sets and to surprise the people as long as the situation fits. This was such a moment and the people understood it, had fun and celebrated the track.

Which track never leaves your box?
With 9pm I have had a worldwide no. 1 hit. I am really surprised because all around the world where I am playing my fans are downright waiting for this track. They love the track and start directly to get freaky as soon as they hear the first notes of the “ATB guitar”. But of course I have some other tracks which will never leave my box and always influence my set. I always have a lot of classics in my case.

So what how has your year been? What have been your highlights?
As you can imagine a special highlight for me is the release of my seventh studio album “Future Memories” this year and furthermore as a DJ it’s a really great year for me.
It doesn’t matter wherever or whenever I’m playing, I’m really grateful to have the opportunity to play my music all around the world and to get directly in touch with my fans. Personally I’m always feeling very well at the US and I think it’s such a highlight to have a three-week US tour in his own tour bus. ;-)

Tell us about your recent album ‘Future Memories’……..
I personally think it´s one of my best albums and also very different form my previous albums. In comparison to these previous albums, I have distanced myself from the classical song writing and the application of real sounds and I have rather concentrated on the work with the keyboard and the synthesisers. The listener shall experience an advanced modern sound with well-known ATB elements. In addition to that, the tempo in the new album plays an important role. It’s of course a trance album but it was important for me to try new things and to break other ground. Therefore, this album includes four tracks above 165 beats per minute.

While working for the second CD I have become addicted to my personal passion, the ambient-music. I love to hear and to produce ambient. My fans get to know different and personal aspects of mine and that’s what accounts for this album. On the one hand you can hear impulsive, melodious club tracks and on the other hand atmospheric, dreamy sounds.

Moreover, I was so delighted in working again with artists from all over the world that inspired me a lot. I had the possibility to work together with Roberta Carter Harrison, Haley and Josh Gallahan as well as with two new and very talented voices of Betsy Larkin and Aruna. And the result is more than good to hear.

Your tour diary stretches to all corners of the globe from tours in America to gigs in Poland, Germany, Romania, Qatar and even Dubai. Where would you say is your favourite destination?Well, everywhere and anytime I’m playing is something special. For me it’s very important that I’m always in touch with my fans and to present my music to them on a personal way. It doesn’t matter if it’s Dubai, Germany, Poland or Great Britain, music is such an universal language to get in touch with the people and everybody understands it.

Where did it all start for you? When did you realise you had ‘made it’?
It’s been more than 13 years that I realised this and it has actually started with a completely different project. It’s true that I have already been successful at that time but it has entirely changed again with the song 9 pm.

What is the last piece of music you bought?
The Soundtrack of the movie K-Pax. I love it so much!

What’s on your rider?
Water, Vodka and plastic cubs and a good crowd! ;o)

What is your pre-set routine?
Getting to the bar before the gig with my friends and have a drink

Finish this sentence. ‘ATB wouldn’t be ATB without……….’
my fans! Thank you all! Respect!

Many Thanks Andre! See you on 24th October!!
