This article is about Deuce vs KeToLoCo (DC15 Leeds) @ Basement in Birmingham (UK), Fri 27 Apr 2007
ADAM DEUCE: In 6 months you have gone from what was basically a student house (after) party to hosting your own room at one of the most legendary clubs in Britain (Back to Basics). I wanted to ask you how the Back to Basics gig came about?
SUTTY KeToLoCo: Our first proper party in September was an unofficial basics after party, our friend Chief knew a few guys from MYHOUSE, and told them what was going on! Dave Beer, Ralph Lawson and a load of other basics DJ's and regulars turned up for the day and absolutely loved it! I passed on a few mix Cd's from the KeToLoCo residents to Dave Beer and asked him to make sure he had a listen as I knew he would be impressed! As our reputation grew and the party’s reputation grew, we began to get offers from all over the place. We were LITERALLY in a meeting with the Northern light and Warehouse promotions manager Alice Chan to sign contracts for a gig in January, when Chris Halliday got a phone call from Dave Beer. He had got Chris' number of the Mix CD that I gave him, and asked us if we wanted to meet up with him as he loved what the KeToLoCo boys were up to! The meeting went really well, and we were offered a chance to host the middle room of basics on a trial basis. It went amazingly well, the room was packed all night, and we once again held the after party @ DC:15 to round off a perfect night and secure a monthly residency with BacktoBasics! We have now been offered MYHOUSE once a month to have KeToLoCo take over the whole venue after the success of the Grand Opening on Friday as well as hosting the middle room on the First Saturday! We will be in talks with the guys at MYHOUSE to confirm all details!
AD: Your parties are obviously heavily influenced by your time in Ibiza and more specifically Circo Loco @ DC10. Are you planning any parties in Ibiza this summer?
SK: 100%! We have already confirmed a few dates. We are working with a company called Subsonic. They have their first party on Saturday 16th June at the abandoned zoo in Benimussa, and have asked KeToLoCo to host a back room. It’s at the old seal pit in the amphitheatre. About a 400 capacity venue! Bigger than Jesus and Audiojack will be flying over especially, but have not confirmed if they will be playing? We will also be running boat parties on a monthly basis if all goes according to plan! Myself, Chris Halliday and George Abbott will be driving over with all the DJ equipment and two sound systems in the KeT-Mobile! (A transit mini-bus van!) Hopefully we will arrange more dates etc. closer to the time. My dream as a promoter would be to work with Circo Loco, maybe run an after party for them? I have been clubbing after Circo Loco, and feel it is such an anti climax from the DC:10 terrace... too serious for my liking! However, I feel that a KeToLoCo carry on would be the perfect type of night to carry on the debauched antics that we are all about! We are also hoping to do something at the Blue Marlin or Underground, as we feel those venue's would be perfect for us!
AD: We hear your last party was raided by the police? Tell us what happened?
SK: I have to be careful what I say here! At around 8am Saturday morning, the road that KeToLoCo is on was cordoned off by the police, and DC:15 was entered by 8 police officers. There were already 2 undercover police at MYHOUSE, and also these guys came back to the house. We have been under surveillance for a while apparently. Our last few parties have had undercover officers there, and also uniformed police driving up and down the road! I'm not too sure if anything has been found, but at the end of the day, KeToLoCo @ DC:15 is just an organised house party, that happens to have world-famous DJ's playing for free! We don't charge to get in. We don't run a bar, so we actually lose money on each one! Apparently, the police had received a tip off from another (insanely jealous) promoter in Leeds, and our myspace has been under watch! That cannot be confirmed thou, but b**locks to club politics! Why try and wreck something that's going well? Also, I can't work out if it was just a bit of paranoia, but every time we have had parties at basics I've been getting questioned by some random people about KeToLoCo! Asking really trivial stuff that any normal clubber just wouldn't ask! The result from this raid will probably do more good than bad for KeToLoCo as everyone in the Industry knows about it! I spoke to Rob Tissera, and Tim Sheridan at the Tidy Weekender, and had both heard about the raid even though they were in different parts of the country! Also, there have been no charges pressed to anyone, and everyone involved has just been let off with a caution! I'm not even to sure what they were arrested for, as i still have to be questioned!
AD: How would you describe the music you are play at KeToLoCo?
SK: Minimal techno, house, acid and dirty electro. Varies quite a bit depending on the DJ! Anything that's good and keeps the crowd happy basically!
AD: What’s the best piece of advise you’ve ever been given?
SK: Money comes and goes. You can only spend time once!
AD: What was the first record you ever bought?
SK: Brainbug "Nightmare"
AD: What is your favourite club in the world? (I think we can probably guess?)
SK: DC:10... Good guess!
AD: Did you make any new years resolutions this year and have you stuck to them?
SK: Don't die... going well so far!
AD: Favourite alcoholic drink?
SK: Strongbow all the way!
AD: Custard or ice cream on apple pie?
SK: Custard... one of the sayings in our group of friends is "custard pie" if something embarrassing happens to you... so would have to go with that!
