This article is about Deuce presents Mistress De Funk (Sankeys & Radio One resident) @ Basement in Birmingham (UK), Fri 23 Mar 2007
Adam Deuce: Hi, thanks for talking to us. Firstly I wanted to ask you how the Radio One show came about and how did you celebrate when you found out you'd got it?
Mistress De Funk: Well, first I got offered the residency at Sankey’s. Of course because of this I was getting a lot of exposure, people were really starting to talk about me. Then I got a phone call from someone at Radio One asking if I’d go down to London to do a demo. It was the most terrifying experience of my life. Colin Murray and Pete Tong both walked passed my studio as I was nervously speaking in to the mic, very surreal! Anyway, I had to do another demo, that went to the board, and they sat round and listened to everyone who'd been put forward. I spent a month waiting for the call. I totally didn’t think I'd get it. I know everyone says that but I really didn’t! I think I spent 3 weeks celebrating! This generally involved drinking lots and telling the whole world! I even managed to bump into someone who was horrible to me at school, it was a delight telling her, ha!!
AD: 2007 is shaping up to be VERY big for you. What are you most excited about?
MDF: God that’s so hard to say! I have something very interesting coming up later in the year, that’s probably the most exciting but unfortunately I can’t disclose that. I’m doing a festival in Macedonia in Sept, 5000 people, with Mistress Barbara, which I’m bloody excited about. There’s loads of stuff abroad, and I’m being flown back and forth to Ibiza all summer which I'm very excited about as it will be my first summer not there in the last few years! I’m most excited about seeing what happens to be honest, if it keeps going like the last 6 months I'll be a very happy girl!
AD: Despite your young years (a baby at only 23) you are a bit of a veteran on the circuit having secured your first ever residency at the tender age of 15. You must have played alongside some big names over the years. Have you ever been truly Star struck and if so who was it? (Maybe we should ask you this one again after April 13th when you play along Tania Vulcano!?!?)
MDF: Ha yeah can you imagine what I'm going to be like then! TANIA VULCANO!! I'll blatantly be the most uncool person ever meeting her! I was a little star struck meeting Trentemoller at the weekend, Jose De Devina was a good one as well, but getting an email from Adam Beyer after he did a guest mix on my show was pretty special, oh and also hearing Thomas Schumacher say 'hey mistress' on the phone was pretty weird as well!
AD: How would you describe the music you are playing out at the moment?
MDF: Its weird cause although it’s minimal, it’s the toughest sort of minimal you can get! I'm always the toughest dj on the night, anywhere I play. Nice and interesting, really heavy, weird noises, gorgeous baselines, quite scary but in a good way. That’s the best way to describe it.
AD: What's the best piece of advice you¹ve ever been given?
MDF: Don’t become over exposed!! It’s so easy to take every gig when they're getting thrown at you like nobodies business, but its best to leave people wanting more than 'Oh I’ve seen her loads'. That’s how people come and go in a year. Longevity is all about anticipation. Trentemoller for example only plays 2 gigs in the UK a year, hence why people are killing each other to book him
AD: What was the first record you ever bought?
MDF: Electribe 101 – “Talking with myself” as I used to play trance!! The good stuff though!
AD: What is your favourite club in the world? (as if we didn’t know)
MDF: Pardon? Does this question even need asking? DC10 of course. Then Fabric a close second.
AD: Did you make any new years resolutions this year and have you stuck to them?
MDF: No I have no will power whatsoever so this is pointless. I quit smoking every Monday without fail!
AD: Favourite alcoholic drink?
MDF: Wine!!! And Vodka! Any really!
AD: Custard or ice cream on apple pie?
MDF: Custard!! Though without the apple pie as its mingin!
AD: Thanks. We can't wait to have you at Deuce for my birthday weekend.
MDF: Lookin’ forward to it.
