This article is about Excentric @ Chic in Birmingham (UK), Fri 20 Apr 2007
When did you realise you were into dance music? When I was about 10, my Auntie and uncle were into the acid house scene and they used to play their tapes to me, I loved it coz it had so much energy to it. There's some pictures of me when I was younger with a smiley face t-shirts on, lol, I'll have to try and find it at my Mums.
How come you wanted to play records and become a dj? When I reached the age of 13 my best mates older brother had decks, so when he went out we use to jump on them, as I was into the music already I knew that this is something I would love to do everyday till my hands fell off.
What was the first music you were into? House and Techno
Who were the dj's that influenced you when you were younger? Dave Clarke, Steve Thomas and Carl Cox
What djs influence you now and why? Sven Vath (Cocoon Ibiza) this guy really opened my eyes last year in Ibiza, he really knows how to work a crowd and his theme he came up with, with the face paint etc just makes it a bit more fun but with the best music in the world.
Fergie (Excentric) I've known this guy a good few years now and what a dj. From when I first saw him play at Sundiessential to this day I've never heard him drop a beat or play a shit track, and doing that for all these years keeping it fresh and always pushing the boundaries. Also he's been very supportive over the years by giving up and coming Djs & Producers a chance show people what they've got through his Radio 1 show or his Excentric parties.
Tell us about your label monumental? Monu is owned by myself & Cesco. Basically we started making music together about two yrs ago and the feedback we were getting was really positive so that’s how the label came about. The label has been doing really well, we are up to our 8th release and going strong we've had releases by Kev Gorman and Stian Klo.
Monu sounds is anything goes as long as it works on the dance floor, its good for us. Monu gets plays from audio jack to Laurent Garnier.
What's your favourite release to date? Umm that’s a hard one thinks it’s got to be Jus Phil - Mayb
What have you got coming up for the label? We've got lots of stuff coming including a new one from myself. I've signed a guy called Alive aka Broken his new track is out at the end of the month- Alive & R.A.W - Qa7 and Qa8. Also Projekt 3 who are ones to look out for.
What's your favourite piece of kit in the studio? My midi keyboard I've turn into a bit of Stevie Wonder these past years, lol. I love writing basslines..
If you could do a track with any one who would it be etc and why? Adam Beyer, I think his style blended in with mine would be very interesting.
Favourite all time track? And why. Laurent Garnier - Crispy Bacon, its so cutting edge and has represented musically what I've gone through over the last 10 years.
Favourite album? Sasha & Digweed Renaissance from '94, unreal
Tell us a secret no one knows about you? If I told ya then it wouldn’t be a secret! ;-)
