This article is about TRONIC FEAT JOEY BELTRAM!! @ The Custard Factory in Birmingham (UK), Sat 25 Aug 2007
When and where was the last time you played in Birmingham? Can you remember?
I haven't played in Birmingham for a very, very long time. The last time has to have been for Atomic Jam, which has got to have been about 10 years ago!!
The gig you're doing for us in August will see you play alongside Joey Beltram - are you a fan of his music and and do your respect him as a dj?
I am a big fan of Joey Beltram, he is one of the best techno producers and has been for as long as I can remember. I haven't seen him dj though.
What's rocking your boat music wise that isn't club orientated?
I listen to a wide variety of music, mainly Hip Hop, RnB, Soul, Jazz. I've been getting into Bobby Valentino recently who is a RnB /Soul producer and the likes of The Game, John Legend and Talibkweli to name a few.
Who or what inspired you to go from music lover to being a part of the music scene and making a living from it?
Carl Cox, he was the one who inspired me. I've known him since my teens as he used to dj Friday nights at the local Town Hall and the boys and myself would go down to check out the big guy!
Do you ever have an opportunity to play eclectic sets ie jazz, hip hop, grooves, disco etc?
No I don't at all, I don't usually get booked to play the backroom!
Do you get more artistic gratification from working in the studio or djing?
From djing definitely, it's a fantastic feeling when your working the crowd and they are showing their appreciation.
Do you still have a lot of analogue equipment or have you scaled down and integrated software with your productions?
I do, which I use with the digital software.
What's your favorite sequencing software ?
I'd have to say Pro tools is the sequencer for me at the moment.
Do you ever have moments when you're working on a track when you get stuck and can't move forward with it? If so what's the best way, in your opinion to deal with that?
For sure, I think a lot of producers do. At that point it's best to take a break and maybe move onto something else it you're really stuck. I've done that a lot before and gone back to half finished tracks and turned it into something slamming!
Do you still feel as excited about music now as you did when you first started out?
Yes I do, but it's harder to find quality techno music these days. Most of the techno artists that were producing great music are now making mnimal!
What's your worst dj nightmare?
Not having the right equipment and being expected to perform - nothing worse in my opinion!!
When you dj do you ever get asked "got anything good?" and if so don't you find that really annoying - I know I do!!!!
I've not been asked if I have anything good, but for particular tracks in a completely different music style which can be frustrating!
Where or what crowds are really receptive to your dj sets at the moment?
Well I play all over Europe and it goes off 95% of the time, the other 5% being down to bad promotion.
Do you plan on doing any "live" performances in the near or perhaps distant future?
No, I think people prefer to see me working it as a dj rather than staring into a computer screen!
I've never quite got my head around "live" electronic performances ie how "live" is it? In reality how live can an electronic performance be???
In my opnion it's only live when you have a band playing the instruments.
How's your mentor label going?
Yeah Mentor is still rocking off, we're now on our 13th release.
Do you find the ascendency of digital downloads has had an impact on your label either in a postive or negative way?
Both really. Negative as vinyl sales are at their lowest and positive because there is a wide choice of online shops, which give the label wider exposure.
What are your views on the emergence of digital downloads?
At first I was not keen and it still has it's disadvantages, but you've got to move with the times!
Do you integrate digital formats with your dj sets these days (sorry if you do just not sure)
Yes I do as I now only play cds as most of the promos received are being sent over the internet and very rarely on vinyl.
I believe your label Mentor is purely for your own production output, have you any plans on signing any other artists?
It is mainly, but obviously if I recieve something that is very good I would sign it to Mentor.
How much of a headache can running your own label be?
In this digital age it is now a lot easier as you can send promos over the internet free to djs playing the same style and do not have the expense of mailing out white labels.
Finally - you've been djing and making music for quite some time now - can you see yourself still being involved in say another 25 years??
Definitely not djing, but maybe producing!
You can catch Trevor's long overdue return to Birmingham at Tronic's forthcoming Custard Factory festival in August
