Xstatic's Techno Terrorist JMF Interviews Ilogik Ahead of Xstatic presents Deprivations 5th Birthday

JMF interviews Ilogik ahead of Xstatic @ the custard factory -13th decmeber

What have been ilogiks highlights of 2008 so far?

i dont have any definining highlights , my memory is terrible. there has
prob been loads but i cant remember. lol i suppose my hight light is that
i am getting off my arse and getting loads of stuff done recently both with
productions and promotion.

Aswell as dj'ing, you've been on the scene producing for many years now,
and have been involved with some of the biggest labels and collaborated
with the biggest names on the circiut. Who has been your favourate to work
with, and can you fill us in on some future juicey bits for the production
side of Ilogik!? ?

well i am very selective with working with other producers and dont really
do it too much as im so busy with my own stuff but i suppose it has to be
paul janes, we have had a working partnership now for a number of years and
he has helped me much to getting my sound right and helping me get to the
stage i am now where i do everything at my studio now. I have got a few
projects going with paul that are none hardhouse which are sounding really
good so watch this space.

What do you enjoy the most, is it when your behind the decks dj'ing to the
masses? Or when your in the studio finishing off one of your killer tracks
that you know is going to go off?

I enjoy behind the decks more, well thats what i did first and i simply
produced as a promotional thing to get my name known. however i do love
making music too, when a track is going well and it comes out blinding that
is such a good feeling too.

DVDJ'ing is a new and unique concept towards djing and clubbing, and is
only done by a hand full of djs. What inspired you to do it and how does
it differ from the traditional method of the 1'z and 2'z?

I decided to do some dvj'ing purley to try something different in a scene
that seemed to need a few different things going on to make it
interesting.. i am always one to try and push new things behind the decks
so i jumped on it. I is much much harder than dj'ing and more time
comsuming too . You have to get the visuals done and prepared first of all
which takes time away from producing. obviously hardhouse traks done have
videos made so this content has to be made. Then when your dvj'ing you have
to control 2 mixers the club mixer and a visual mixer too and then 2 to 3
cdjs and 2 dvj units...at times i have been mixing 2 cdjs and then at the
same time making sure some visuals are playing in time and having to mix
those too.. its very hard, kind of like mixing on 4 decks but harder as you
have to think alot more. It wouldnt be so hard if all tracks had videos but
thats not the case at the moment unfortunatly. On top of this i have found
that you have so much to do that it is very hard to interact with the crowd
as your constantly doing stuff. I can remember the last time i did one
someone bought me a drink and i didnt have time to have a gup all set till
after i had finished.......

Hard house has drifted through various stages and sounds in its course so
far and maybe come slightly more overground. What are your views on the
hard house scene today and how does it differ from the early days of
Ilogik?

well it certainly has changed and i think it is partly due to technology
and how easily accessible it is for anyone to try make a tune. There is
alot of poor stuff flying around and it seems that all people are doing is
trying to copy other peoples stuff but not really pulling it off. The sound
went off in lots of directions but i feel like its time for the old style
sound to come back but slightly developed in production style and tricks
bringing it bang up to date. proper riffs and nice basses are the order of
the day, tracks that you hear for the first time and leave the club
remembering it.

I think most hard heads would like to get their mits on your tune
collection! Whats the biggest banger in your box at the miniute?

the biggest banger in my box is a track i have done recently called "tronic
equator" everytime i play it it goes off bigstyle, i get e mails all the
time asking about and have a few big labels wanting to sign it wo will see
, its just so different to anything around. ive used a big electro synth
sound and a big dring off bass so it incorporates different styles but
still keeps that hardhouse flow and energy.

The custard factory is a very unique and exciting club, plus the usual
xstatic madness and more, its going to be one hell of a night! Will you be
having a boogie and a few beverages..?

oh yes for sure, i always stick around at gigs, i like to mingle with
people and see whats working and whats not working etc.. i dont like
playing the just leaving .

Finally, how have you seen Xstatic come on over the years and do you think
we have the building blocks for a respected brand?

For sure,, any club night that has been going for a few years has got to
have the building blocks there to be a respected brand.. it is hardder than
ever at the moment to run and night and xstatic are doing it well and seem
to be going from strength to strenght, especially with the move to the
custard factory.
