Xstatic Catch up with Ben Gold Ahead of the Summer Marquee Party!

Hi Ben, it’s been a busy last couple of months for yourself, with releases and remixes out, and let’s not forget your number one hit ‘Life’ on Beatport. You must be feeling quite pleased?

Hi Danny. Yeah, I’m pleased how things are going. The DJ diary is healthy, as is the remix schedule, and the original releases also. I used almost every weekend in the first 2 months of this year to spend time in the studio, so I was able to build up a nice amount of music. I was over the moon with the success of ‘Life’… Hence the title of my radio show!

We believe this is also your Birmingham debut, what can the Xstatic crowd expect?

I try and play as much of my own music in my sets as possible, and its looking like I’m going to have a fair few originals that wouldn’t have been played elsewhere so it will be good to road test them in Birmingham.

How would you describe your sound at the moment? As we believe you’ve just been signed to Marcel Wood’s Musical Madness Label, can you tell us more?

I’ve had a handful of high energy bpm tracks out over the last 2 years which have all been released through the Discover stables, so they have all been the driving end of trance. I haven’t got bored of that style, I have just found myself experimenting a lot more with different sounds, infact, my last 5 projects I have done are very different to what my previous releases/remixes have sounded like. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m completely changing my sound/style, I’m just really enjoying making the music that I am right now!

Be:Gold is an alias project that I have just signed to Musical Madness, correct. This is very different to anything I have done before. The first single ‘StarStruck’ will be out soon. Apart from ‘Frontline’, I had never used an alias, but when you work for a label, you get restricted with the amount of original music you can release, mainly down to a busy release schedule that the label has in place, so I wanted to write something that was substantially different to what I had been doing prior, so came up with ‘StarStruck’. A sample is available at; www.myspace.com/bengoldonline

You’ve just started your own radio show ‘Life’ on Afterhours FM, how’s that going?

I’m really happy with the show. I spend all month going through the download portals and promo’s, and enjoy putting it all together. I’m glad to be apart of afterhours.fm, they have a great community online who are very interactive, and also know their music. I always make sure I am in the forums when my show is on, it’s always nice to read what the listeners think. Originally I was only going to have an hour show, but was lucky enough to get a 2 hour’s, which enables me to cross styles from my early doors kind of set, to my more full on side towards the end of the show!!

What’s your standout club experience to date?

I’m luckily enough to have a few but will keep them short: Following Armin at Peach (Camden Palace, London) when I was 18 years old; Main room Gallery at (the much missed) Turnmills, and all the gigs that I supported Paul Oakenfold on, on his UK tour!!

Are there any embarrassing stories you’d like to tell us about that have happened to you while djing?

Haha!! I have one that stands out like a sore thumb actually. I was playing after the Trophy Twins at the Honey Club in Brighton when the Thomas Gold remix of Delirium was doing the rounds, and they ended their set on it! It had just got into the breakdown, the monitors were turned down and we were just having a chat, pouring a drink etc, and I ejected the ‘Delirium’ CD just as it got to the chorus!! Of all tunes to do it too hey?! They were cool. The crowd just cheered, so I started it again. It happens!!!

Out of all the tracks you have produced, which one did you most enjoy putting together and why?

I enjoy every track I do. Some take a couple of weeks, some take a couple of days. I enjoyed writing ‘Roll Cage’ because it was my first solo outing as ‘Ben Gold’. The new ‘Ben Gold. Feat Senadee – Today’ was a lot of fun. We started from nothing, but both had loads of ideas about the vocal, the melody, the groove etc. And I’m really enjoying the ‘Be:Gold’ tracks that I am doing also. The bpm is a lot slower, so gives you a lot more room to get really intricate with the groove of the track.

Who would you say has been the biggest influence on your career?

Without answering this question in the obvious way, an artist/DJ for example… My family. I have been a full time studio engineer for 4 years, but the last year has been spent working from home, where I have clients in 3 days a week, and the music on constant from 9am (ish) till 6, sometimes later. And it gets loud for the majority of that time frame!!

What 5 tracks are really doing the business in your dj sets and radioshow at the moment?

Matt Hardwick – I Am DJ (Ben Gold Remix)
ID-ID (Oliver Brooks remix)
Ben Gold feat. Senadee – Today
Ummet Ozcan – Time Wave Zero
Be:Gold - StarStruck

And last question, the random one. What’s the worst chat up line you’ve ever used on a girl? And be honest Ben...

I can’t remember the line, but I can remember the girl, unfortunately haha!!

Thanks Ben.
