What's your opinion of the club scene in general at the moment and more specifically Blackpool?

The club scene is suffering. I think this is due to the new 24 hour licensing. What I mean by that is we used to have “pubs” and “clubs”. The pubs used to close at 11pm. After that everyone went to a club. Now with the 24 hour licensing the pubs aren't closing until at least 12pm sometimes 2-3 am. This means that a lot of people aren't going to the clubs after the pubs close.

Before the law was passed you would tend to find that pubs would be competing with other pubs and the clubs would be competing against other clubs. The emphasis was always on who had the best entertainment on. Now everyone is trying to appeal to a mass market and the clubs are finding themselves competing against pubs.

The pubs and clubs are now having drinks price wars. Everyone is trying to offer cheaper prices in a bid to get the customers.

This is definitely the case in Blackpool where there are over 20 venues competing for the same crowd. Everywhere is opening until the early morning and places are struggling to get customers through the door.

In terms of music, your style seems to vary from funky house to progressive and dirty house. What really does it for you?

Its got to be fantastic vocal, really uplifting house.

Most embarrassing DJ moment?

I'd been Djing for about a year and was very lucky to be resident at The Palace nightclub, it was one of the biggest nightclubs in the country. It was Easter Bank Holiday and the place was packed with 3,000 clubbers having a great time. I took the needle off the wrong record by mistake! The music stopped, the crowd jeered. I dropped the needle back on the track and threw myself on the floor in horror.

If you could DJ anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I'd love to play at a festival like Creamfields or Global Gathering but I don't like mud!!

Tell us a little about yourself, how did you start Djing?

Started off buying vinyl. I liked the different mixes. Remixes fascinated me, how you could get so many different versions just from one track. I ended up spending every penny I had on vinyl.

I got my first pair of decks when I was 17. They were a pair of Technics belt drive turntables and a cheap Tandy mixer. I bought them off my friend because I thought they looked cool. Didn't have a clue what to do with them. After a while and having spent all that money on them thought I'd better learn how to use them.

I bought myself a set of Technics 12 10's and began annoying my friends with my mix tapes.

What is the most annoying thing to say to a DJ?

Have you got anything decent?
Can I MC?
Have you got any Boyzone?
If you play my song everyone will get up and dance!
But its my birthday!!

What do you think of the current dance scene, in terms of the music?

I think there is no originality these days! There are too many poorly produced, cheesy remakes of 80's chart songs. It has saturated the pop charts and ruined the dance scene. I blame DJ Sammy for all of this.

How did you get started on Radio?
I went to the radio station on work experience whilst at college studying business and finance. I started on the graveyard shift. Did the breakfast show for 6 years and I'm now the programming manager.

What does that entail?

Looking after the presenters, creating the play lists, dealing with the promotions, charity work. Bit of everything really.

Most unusual Venue/Gig you've ever done?

I've played to 1,100 deaf people. Amazing experience. It was at a club called The Boom Boom Room on Blackpool Promenade. Every year there is a deaf rally in Blackpool and they used to take over the club for the weekend.

Finally, tell us your location, favourite television programmes, pets and finally Ibiza or Miami?

Thornton (near Blackpool), Heroes, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Jack Russell called Lotti and definitely Ibiza.

Thanks Roy. Don't forget you can catch Roy at Nocturnal every Friday night at Joya in St. Annes
