To generate a laser beam, you take a laser diode and precisely space it from a collumating lense.

The laser diodes themselves come in various wavelengths, which determines the color of the beam. The color spectrum goes from infrared, above say 800 nm, down through visible light, red at 670, orange 635, green is approx 550nm. to blue to ultraviolet.

Admittedly, Green is the optimum color for the human eye to see/recognise.

The problem is that there is actually no such thing as a green laser beam. The green lasers, you are hearing about, use an infrared laser diode and run it through a "doubler chip" which cuts the IR wavelength in half in order to reach the green spectrum.

Wicked picture. Its also so because green is much cheaper.

Red being the cheapest but doesn't look as good.
Then Green.
The most expensive and hardest to make are white, pink and pale blue colours.
