So we take time out with the duo to find out what there future & present plans are. . .
Q) When did you actually first start Djing professionally and how has the journey been so far??
Gnetic) I first started DJ'ing when I met up with Matt Harris Aka X-cess while I was living in Bournemouth. This first meeting led me to making tunes and djing.
Most of my time in Bournemouth was spent in a record shop called Atmospheric Records, owned by Matt and his brother Scott who are now know as the organ donors
My very first release was on a record label called Man from Uncle that was run by Stu J, promotor of a club in Bournemouth called Madisons. That lead to me working with Chris Knightforce and then having releases put out on Pure Dance, GBT, Storm Trooper Records and Obsession. I also Had residency at nights such as Destiny and Adrenalin, and playing at other local night's in the south coast. To cut a long story cut short... I moved back to oxford and met with Ryan H who runs a night in oxford called Project Storm and in turn meeting the free party crew. I started to dj out every weekend, in barns, fields and warehouses and it was at one of the parties on the Ridgeway where I was introduced to Logger. From there the tracks just started to roll out.
Logger) My first gig was back in 1996 playing alongside my then B2B partner Gringo (Ceedee1.) We were booked to play a happy hardcore warm-up set at a local Thursday night Drum and Bass night in Coventry. I was in the middle of my GSCE exams at the time and managed to fall asleep in my English Lit. Exam the following day. In ’98 we set up our own night, B.D.I. which we ran around every 6 weeks with Houdini and a few other friends, and stumbled across the free party scene in ’99 where we managed to secure a slot on one of the Junktion 14 sound systems and later Survival. Along with this we played regularly in the Hard Dance room at Oblivion at Grendon Lakes and Leicester, as well as Powered Up at Subway City in Birmingham and Saucered in Coventry. We decided to take a break from running B.D.I. in 2002 and after our regular sets dried up and our musical styles began to differ, myself and Gringo decided it was time to call it a day on our partnership. Although I’d been learning to produce since ’97 it wasn’t until after I stopped taking the whole DJ/Production thing so seriously in 2004 that I managed to knock a half decent track together, I’d stopped going to clubs altogether and spent most weekends at free parties in the home counties. I first hooked up with Gnetic on the Ridgeway after he’d heard a mix CD of mine our mate Carly had pinched out of one of my best mate Tim’s car, we got on like a house on fire and I sent him over some of the tracks I’d been working on. He came up to my studio and our first joint effort was “Tales of The Ridgeway part 1” and then “Hypertransfer” a few weeks later. Within a few months myself, Gnetic and Houdini had enough tracks together to span a full mix – “It’s not my fault your kid fell off a cliff on a school trip.” Although the production was a bit ropey we received a massive amount of positive feedback and quite a few of the DJ’s on the party scene started playing our tracks. Ryan and Matt at Project Storm got right behind us and started giving us slots and the bookings for Logger&Gnetic started rolling from there.
What’s the maddest, craziest, worse, best thing that has ever happened to you at a gig you’re performing at?
Gnetic) I think the worse thing that i have done at a gig was at Project Storm. It was when Land of Plenty was just about to drop and the crowd where ready to go off, I and was messing with the cdj and pressed the wrong button and skipped to next track... woops…. So good i had to play it twice!
Logger) I love watching the mosh pit at free parties and the similar club nights, dropping one of our well known tunes and seeing a wave of people pile into the speakers when the beat kicks in never fails to make me smile. In particular on New Years Eve just gone, the crowd were going so wild they knocked the rig over, we had to stop the tunes while the crew put it back together but I was buzzing about that for weeks.
Worse thing was probably at our first BDI night where we had no monitors and the speakers were facing us, it was almost impossible to mix and I had little experience playing out at the time and the whole set consisted of car crash machine gun mixing. Oh and the many occasions where we’ve been playing at the Coven and someone’s opened the fire doors which cuts out the power to the decks and leaves the dance floor looking up at you like it’s your fault the music’s just gone off!
Q) Can you tell us a bit about your new projects dance music related or otherwise ?
Gnetic) We’re currently working on our 4th album, and also working alongside Project Storm Recordings which has just been set up. We've had one release to date which we kept ltd to 250 copies, the next EP is lined up ready for release as we speak. So much is going on watch this space.........
Logger) We’re nearly finished our next mix album, ever since the success of our first we’ve put one together once we have enough tracks. We give it out for free and make it available to download to showcase our work, usually each year. This one’s taken a lot longer and everyone who’s been involved wants to make sure it’s as good as it can be before we put it out.
Our next vinyl release is on Project Storm Recordings with another planned later in the year, to launch these we’ve resurrected B.D.I. and join forces with Project Storm to put on a big event in Coventry on April 25th.
We’ve got Industry Standard coming on Resistance’s Deep Pacific digital label with a banging Sully remix and on top of that I’m pleased to announce that Project Storm Digital will also be launching in the next month or so putting up some previously un-released material from the last two albums and later on some of our newer stuff.
Q) Digital revolution how has it affected you, do you still release on vinyl? What is your take on the new era?
Gnetic) Project Storm are setting up 2 digital labels on trackitdown as well as the Project Storm Recordings label so expect to see releases on vinyl also. I think mixing on cdjs is good by the means we can play our stuff out as soon as it’s made, but you can’t beat a nice slab of vinyl.
Logger) As a lot of our roots are in the free party scene where vinyl is still very big we’ll continue to release stuff on that format, digital just means that we can release some of our more experimental material without labels having to risk the high cost of producing Vinyl. As Dj’s we’ve stopped using vinyl a long time ago as we’ve had no choice but to play from CD to enable us to play sets of entirely our own tracks without going down the path of doing a live PA and the hassle that goes with it. Doing this differentiates our sets from others and lets us test out new tracks so we can tweak them before doing the final mixdown and judge crowd reactions.
Q) If you could remix any tune what would it be ?
Gnetic) It would have to be something on Blutonium Records.
Logger) I’d love to remix the Uberdruck vs Jason Midrow Mix of the Australia & New Zealand Tour E.P. 2004 I love the riff and I’d love the chance to do a Logger&Gnetic take on it. I’ve not got that much interest in remixing “big” tunes as I wouldn’t want to spoil the original if I didn’t think I could it justice. BK’s Revolution was recently up for remix on trackitdown.net and while I was tempted to have a go, there really wasn’t anything I could have done that would have made me want to play my mix over the two mixes on the original vinyl.
Are there any artists you would like to work along side?
Gnetic) Sam Punk, Technoboy, Blutonium Boy
Logger) I’d love to work alongside some of the big European Hardstyle DJ’s like Zany, Technoboy and Blutonium Boy, I’d love to know how they work, their sound is so big and polished, I’m a million years behind them in terms of production. UK wise I’d like to work with Dark by Design, he seems to put out a similar mix of styles to us and everything I’ve heard from him recently has been awesome.
What kind of music do you listen to when you relax ?
Gnetic) classical, 96-97 Happy Hardcore.
Logger) I listen to all sorts from 80’s pop to hair metal, my favorite bands are Green Day, Muse, Queen and dare I say it My Chemical Romance.
What do you do when you’re not working??
Gnetic) I like to socialise with friends, make music and mess about with computers. Also have an interest in sound systems.
Logger) Ever since I’ve been a kid I’ve been a massive gamer, I don’t tend to stick to one genre but the games I enjoy most usually have an element of creativity and freedom, or tell a good story. My all time favorites include The secret of Monkey Island 1+2, Black and White, Mass Effect, The Sims and Sensible World of Soccer. I’m currently playing Rock Band 2, Fallout 3 and then Harvest Moon on my pink DS (don’t ask). I’m really looking forward to Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIII and the upcoming conversion of Games Workshop’s classic tabletop Blood Bowl.
What producers are you digging atm?
Gnetic) Zany, Organ Donors, Slideout, Technoboy, Logger and Gnetic lol!
Logger) Those I mentioned earlier as people I’d like to work with, but also Builder, Kamui, Louk, Slideout, Andrea Montorsi and Luca Antolini
Top 5 tracks atm??
Gnetic) This 1's quite a hard one to answer as im still caining older stuff
Make it Louder - Blutonium Boy Naked - Chris C Pursuit of the Elusive – Logger&Gnetic Land of Plenty – Logger&Gnetic The Worzels – I’ve got a brand new Combine Harvester lol!
Logger) I’ve just upgraded my studio so I have to admit I haven’t had the chance to buy much vinyl over the past few months. At home I’m still caining Hells Bells – Dark by Design, Electro Slut – Kamui, Follow Me – Louk (Mike Steventon Mix) Where are you – Lady Tom and Her Voice - Builder
What else can we expect to come from logger & Gnetic in the future?
Gnetic) World Domination Hahahaha!
Logger) That’s a good question! Whatever comes our way really, we’ll certainly be hitting the studio hard over the summer in between gigs, we’re still spending a lot of time refining our production techniques so our tracks sound more polished and a little less rough and ready. We’re also working to expand our bookings and play in areas and to crowds we haven’t played to before.
Getting signed by uberdruck records must be massive for you guys how did this fill?
Gnetic) Well it was nice to have a release on uberdruck records but even though the release was a huge success, we didn’t feel that it was one of our best tunes that went out.
Logger) We’d both been fans of Uberdruck Records for many years and it was a great privilege to have our name grace the label, it also opened a lot of doors for us and the release was far more successful than I ever could have hope it would be. I’d like to say a big thanks to everyone who’s bought the record and given it support, it means a lot to both of us.
is this your first visit to the southwest?
Gnetic) No, it’s where my djing/producing started, so I’m looking forward to coming back to see how the scene has changed.
Logger) It is mine; Gnetic lived down there in his youth as I’m sure he’ll tell you. The closest I’ve got is a holiday to Weymouth as a kid!
What do you know about the southwest hardtrance scene?
Gnetic) I have heard that the scene is big and it’s getting bigger.
Logger) If I’m honest not a lot, it’s easy to get stuck in a bubble in your own little piece of the scene so I’m looking forward to coming down and seeing how things are done down there!
Finally are you looking forward to your set @ Resistance?
Gnetic) Bring it on!!! Can’t wait...
Logger) Definitely, I always relish the opportunity to play to new crowds, see what goes down well and try to shape a set around it, roll on the 8th of May HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
