A FULL ON INTERVIEW WITH THE LEGANDRY RAINDANCE RESIDENT DJ SCAR
On the run up to Sub-Sonic's night @ the Empire Club in Bournemouth on the 28th march, Sub-Sonic resident Dj Rik-E-D and Co owner took time out to interview Dj Scar on her Australian tour with Raw Elements and all the in's and out of how this amazing Dj has worked her way to where she is today before she heads into Bournemouth to play and headline the night on the 28th March......

Q.) Where and how did it all start for you dj-ing?

My brother got me into the rave choons in 1992 but it wasn’t until 2002 that I had my first decks. I used to collect a lot of vinyl from hardcore to trance to Italian Old Skool, but never had the chance to take it seriously as I was studying at university and backpacking around the world. In 2004 I met Uplift and started working for the label promoting, and shortly after I had organised a tour to Australia. Unfortunately one of the djs had to head back to the UK at short notice, I was given the opportunity to play my first gig, and it’s been fast forward since then. Within weeks I was playing at more parties in Sydney and a month later returned to the UK to play at Raindance, and surprise Uplift on his birthday!

Q.) When was your first gig and how did the crowd take to you.

My first party was in Sydney Feb 2006 playing back to back with Dj Uplift at an event called Dosage which was a fortnightly party. They had their biggest attendance to date, and was a really good night, a lot of my friends and family came out and supported me :)

Q.) We’re starting to see more female djs like yourself breaking out on the dance scene. Why do you think that is?

I think it’s great that there are more female djs taking to the decks and being recognised. It’s a tough scene to break through but the girls who are currently pushing through have all been working hard to get there just as much as the lads do. Music has always been my passion and something I have wanted to be a part of ever since I was little, just having this opportunity to work in the hardcore scene has been amazing!

Q.) Your currently working with Dj Uplift and Raw Elements?

Though the label has been running since 2002, Uplift invited me in 2004 as the promotions and PR manager. It wasn’t until 2006 that I began dj-ing and now more recently producing and released my first track. Dj Uplift and I work extremely well together, he is not only my best friend, but also my dj partner and we have a couple of tracks produced together ready to go which will be released during 2008. We’ve been touring during the last year with international dates in Canada and Australia, as well as throughout the UK. I just couldn’t imagine sharing these experiences with anyone else.

Q.) You've now done your third tour of Sydney Australia with Raw Elements?

I grew up in Sydney but recently returned to play at a party called Planet Manic representing the UK with Dj Uplift! Its really exciting dj-ing out here, as my parents, my brother and a lot my friends all came out to support me at the Sydney Olympic Centre in February.

On Australia Day I also got to play at a rave on a beach near Wollongong called 'Dex @ The Beach'. Was a great ''Aussie'' day with tunes, swimming, bbq, cricket and getting badly sun burnt!

I also had the opportunity to feature on the local community radio station which broadcasts a hardcore show every Friday night. While on our tour both myself and Uplift played on this station twice bringing the newest sound of UK hardcore to the Sydney listeners.

Q.) What artist has inspired you in terms of dj-ing and production over the last 12 months?

The level of production has intensified over the last couple of years and there are so many producers I look up to. Al Storm is definitely one producer I have always looked up to, he’s very diverse and I love the Warped Science sound he’s developed especially more recently.

Q.) Is there any dj's or producers that you would really like to work with?

Mike Euphony without a doubt! He’s one of the most talented musical producers and very under rated in the scene. I think I must own almost every tune ever produced by him and he never fails to disappoint. Not only being talented in the hardcore scene he’s a great teacher, friend and a good role model.

Q.) Your first release was ‘Lift Off’ & ‘Dreamtime’ on Raw Elements. Can we expect more from you in the future?

Definitely! I have a few lined up ready to go on my own and some others produced with Uplift, Druid and Clodhopper. My next release is due out in March: Raw Elements 22. Both sides have had some real positive responses with ‘One’ by myself, Uplift & Vicky Fee featuring on the latest Bonkers 17 compilation and on the flip side is ‘Back Into Time’, also produced by Uplift and myself which was played on Radio 1 in the ‘New Djs We Trust’ show with Kutski. I am really excited about this release as I love both tunes a lot.

Q.) We know that you have gained residencies with Raindance, X-Treme Energy, History Of Hardcore, Epidemik and Random Ravers is there any more you would like us to know about?

As much as I love my residency parties there are lots of other parties who have also given me the opportunity to play and show what I’m about! Also, weekly I am busy playing 2 hour shows on three different radio stations which include Eruption 101.3fm (London’s longest running hardcore pirate radio station), Krafty Radio and History Of Hardcore radio. Thought I better mention them as the management and the listeners have been so supportive every week and step of the way!

MY WEEKLY RADIO SHOWS

Saturdays 1400-1600hrs www.historyofhardcore.co.uk
Sundays 2200-2400 hrs www.eruptionhardcore.co.uk
Thursdays 1900-2100 hrs www.kraftyradio.com

Q.) Do you have any major plans for the future?

2008 is already starting to be a busy year with a couple releases lined up to hit the shelves in the next couple of months and some international dates which are already in the diary for Poland and returning to Australia to play in Brisbane. They are the biggest plans though on the home front I’ll continue playing my weekly radio shows, sitting in the studio, playing around the UK and juggling working full time as a nurse.

Q.) First track bought?

Promised Land by Paul Elstak was my first bought vinyl

Q.) Fav all time track?

I hate this question as I can never just name one:

· Atlantic Ocean - Waterfall

· Baby D - Let Me Be Your Fantasy

· Dune - I Can’t Stop Raving - Dune (the tune that got me into hardcore)

· Ian Van Dahl - Inspiration (Sy and Unknown remix)

Q.) Vinyl or cd's ?

I started on vinyl though I play CD these days and I love playing Upfront Hardcore

Q.) Best and worst moment?

Best - Playing in Québec, Canada with Uplift on my 26th birthday last October at a party called ‘Blacklight 3’ in front of over a room of 1000 ravers where everyone was dressed in Halloween Costumes. I’ve never seen ravers go off as much as these guys did and everyone kept speaking to me in French and getting me to sign things and body parts!

Worst - Finding out one of my London raving mates passed away last year, that period was really hard for me. Going out in London has never really been the same as it always feels a bit empty without him. But Together Uplift and I held a rave on his behalf to raise money for a plaque and give him a final send off. RIP Geordie Lee.

Q.) (Last one). We’re due to see you headline in Bournemouth for Sub-Sonic on the 28th March. Would you like to comment on this?

Really excited about playing Bournemouth as its my first time down South and Ive heard so much about Sub-Sonic group. As a request from the Sub-sonic crew I will be playing a recent track myself and Clodhopper finished called Subsonic as well (How ironic!)

Thank you for your time and interview

You can catch Dj Scar at Sub-Sonic @ The Empire Club, Bournemouth on Friday 28th March

Cya there
