This article is about Slinky's Halloween Ball 2009 @ O2 Academy (formerly The Opera House) in Bournemouth (UK), Sat 31 Oct
Bryn is one of the names regularly appearing in Slinky's room two, and also helps out behind the scenes with Slinky. We caught up with him in advance of the Halloween Ball to get the low-down on his world and how he managed to get involved with the events.
1. Hi Bryn, traditionally with Slinky interviews we ask the DJs what they’re currently listening to, where they’re sat, and what their favourite TV programmes are just so we can get the picture. Please tell. I am currently sat on my sofa watching Two & a Half Men and listening to Tiesto with a glass of Baileys… nothing better to relax to!
2. You’ve become more involved with Slinky over the last year as a DJ. Could you tell us how you got involved and what the experiences have been like so far please? I’ve been DJ’ing for Slinky for a year after making my debut last year at the Halloween Ball. I became involved after playing for Frenzy who were hosting the second room where I was asked to play. It went very well and since I’ve been asked back time and time again. It’s been a great experience so far meeting new people and playing my own stuff – plus getting a good reaction… which makes the hairs on my arms stand up on end!
3. As well as DJ’ing, you’ve also recently started to take more responsibility with helping us out on some of the day to day promotion. Could you tell the Slinky clubbers what that involves and also how that came about? I am now the ground promotion manger which involves all outlets getting tickets, making sure flyer and posters are up everywhere and thinking of new ideas for getting Slinky to the masses. I’d done some work for Tidy over last few years with the events and working hard does pay off as I’m now with Slinky.
4. For last year’s Halloween Ball the Slinky crew all revealed their scariest ever experiences. Now it’s your turn so we’d like to know what event in your life was the scariest or most frightening. Well last Christmas Eve I went out on a traditional drinking session and on the way home had a piece of plastic in my mouth. I was laughing and ended up swallowing it so was rushed to hospital. I didn’t get a operation until 4pm on Christmas Day and I was finally released on Boxing Day. The doctors said I nearly died twice… so quite scary and very lucky to be here still!
5. As an up and coming DJ, which DJs and promoters have you aspired to follow in your career, and have you been influenced by any particular ones over the years? I can say many including the Tidy Boys, Andy Whitby, Lisa Lashes, Lee Haslam and my good friend Velos. To see what he has accomplished in the time he has done it has truly influenced me to get what I want.
6. And how did you get into the crazy world of hard house, hard dance, and trance? Was there a defining moment when you knew it was something you wanted to be involved in? Eleven years ago I was staying at my mate’s house when he put on a CD which turned out to be Gatecrasher Wet and I loved it! I went to my first club in 2000 which was Slinky and was hooked… and it will be my last club I go to!
7. Care to tell us your top five dance tracks of all time, and also your least favourites if you dare? My top five are: 1. Gouryella – Gouryella 2. Push – The Legacy 3. Arome – Hands in the Air 4. Tony de vit – The Dawn 5. Tiesto – He’s a Pirate I don’t think I have any bad ones, apart from maybe anything by Korn!
8. Is there anything you want to tell us about that will happening in 2009 and 2010 for yourself? For example any new tracks or productions or DJ gigs? Next year I will be moving more away from hard dance and doing more trance stuff as it’s what I grew to love from growing up. I want to do more of it and am in the studio with Michael Dow a few times next year plus learning to do myself.
9. So what can the Slinky clubbers expect from you on the 31st of October in the room two? Expect a cheeky bootleg and some damn fast and hard trance. And maybe a little bit of filth as well.
10. Lastly, you’re a man of the world, and an all round knowledgeable guy. With that in mind we’re going to leave the last word to you. Why thank you…. Er, just want to say thank you to everyone that has supported me like my family and Lee Haslam, Marc Heighway, and Velos. Don’t give up on your dreams because if you chase them long enough they will come true!
