A Kidd with a Kaos Theory – Talking Production with Hard Dance’s Freshest Musical Prodigy

This article is about Resonate @ The Old Firestation in Bournemouth (UK), Fri 12 Sep 2008

Kidd Kaos has already achieved things some DJ’s and aspiring Producers would have had to wait until they were at least in their late twenties, early thirty’s to accomplish. At just 16, he made a beeline for a Creative Music course and now as a result of consistent and dedicated practise, he has no less than 17 releases on his Trancefuzion label alone along with long time collaborator and friend DJ Joe E. At present he spends his studio time with the Award Winning DJ & production powerhouse that is Alex Kidd and has just set up another label to his own credit, going under the K405 imprint, with it’s first thrusting slice of funky, filthy, dirty Hard Dance; ‘I Am Digital’ on the brink of release. He then spends his nights (and in some cases days) DJ’ing in Plymouth, Ireland, Wales, Glasgow, Swansea and everywhere in between covering the likes of Kiddstock, Freefall, Resonate, Escape, Goodgreef and The Tidy Weekender.

His style can be described as energetic, powerful Hard Dance and his production has been welcomed with open arms by such credible sources as Radio One’s Kutski, international arena smasher Yoji and German Hard Dance hero ASYS; as well as getting his material consistently tried and tested by the biggest names in the Hard Dance armoury. He’s had a 21 minute showcase on Kutski’s international radio show and has become one name on a shortlist of futuristic entertainers (alongside German sensation Kamui) that are set to re-shape and re-define the future of Hard Dance as we know it today, always keeping it fresh, original and interesting. You only have to look at his website, adorned with fan messages and positive props from those that have thoroughly enjoyed experiencing his distinguished sound to see that this Kidd is definitely causing Kaos out there in club land right now and all of this at the tender age… of just 20.

I took some time out to talk to the Kidd about his work, production, his relationship with some of Hard Dance’s biggest names and his forthcoming appearance at Resonate this weekend.

Is it true you started writing music as young as 12? If so, how did you achieve this and what inspired you to develop such a talent?

No its not, I was around 7 or 8 when a friend of the family left a Pearl kick drum and snare with a hi-hat at our house in Cornwall and I practiced all the time. When I started to mess with the idea of production, it was on a Sony Playstation. I was around 13 when I got my own PC loaded with a very early copy of Fruity Loops and I spent hours learning the programme which is still one of my main production platforms today. I made music for the buzz and just continued to make tracks how I liked them and was always learning as time progressed.

And are you currently still studying a degree in Creative Music – how’s that coming along? Do you feel it important for a lot of young Producers, even if they know they are skilled enough to cut it - to still go through the ‘educational system’ and achieve qualifications as you have done?

I am still studying for a degree in Creative Music; this is my last year of a 5 year course. I feel that producing music and understanding the whole industry today is quite complex, a good understanding of how it works always helps. The skills and knowledge I have gained from my course have definitely helped me so yes, I would recommend any aspiring producer to take a decent course in music production.

Staying on the subject of being only young – you are – how old now? And already you have achieved quite a bit in so far as recording and releasing is concerned – tell us about your label and subsequent releases to date and of course what’s coming up?

I am currently 20, last year I felt my music had reached a point which was good enough to be heard. Rather than approaching other labels, DJ Joe E and myself setup Trancefuzion Recordings, which we released all our own material through, as well as other new producers namely: Callum B, Brian Eddie and Louk to name a few. I have released 17 tracks on Trancefuzion as well as doing some collaborations and remix work. I also completed two projects with Alex Kidd which are the ‘Bass Loverz EP’ & ‘The Kiddstock Theme 2008’ which are massive tracks. I have just launched my new label K405 Records, with the first release ''K4051 - I Am Digital'' - K405 Records will showcase mainly my own productions with the odd remix / collaboration with other artists. Expect many great releases from both labels in the coming months.

Kutski recently quoted that “Kidd Kaos has production experience way beyond his years” – an accolade he doesn’t award lightly – how did you feel when he announced that, given that he is fast becoming a much respected presence in our scene?

When Kutski announced “Kidd Kaos has production experience way beyond his years” on Radio 1, I was at home with my girlfriend listening to the show. I was simply lost for words, Kutski is a top bloke and is supporting a lot of my music and to be spoken of so highly of was simply an honour.

Tell us about the All Star Squad – and who it comprises of?

The ‘Kiddfectous All Star Squad’ comprises of Alex Kidd, Kutski and Kidd Kaos. Kiddfectious Records will platform the creations from the All Star Squad and many other artists. I am proud to be part of such an exciting project, with many big plans for the future!

On the subject of ‘All Stars’, who inspires you in today’s Hard Dance scene – and were there any particular legends that inspired you as a child?

I have so much musical inspiration drawn from so many different directions and artists I wouldn't know where to start! The artists in the industry that have given me most inspiration are Alex Kidd for his unbeatable stage presence and the producers that inspire me most are Scot Project, Kamui and Sander van Doorn.

We live and work in a scene that is ever changing, ever evolving, you were born at a particular time when it was really moving into a major direction and yet has changed so much in the space of your lifetime – what do you do to always stay in front of the competition, to be different and original as both Producer and DJ?

I don't know! I just love to make music you want to dance to.

It certainly seems you’ve got the attention of some our scene’s biggest names, including the Goodgreef boys not least - tell us about some of the names and talents that are currently championing your material?

Alex Kidd has given me endless support from day one, playing my tracks before anyone had ever heard of the name Kidd Kaos. Alex has continued to support my material and has helped me make contacts in the music industry which I am very grateful for. Kutski has given me a lot of support also, playing my tracks on Radio 1 and an interview and guest mix for his show. ASYS has been dropping a few bits on his regular 'Filtered' radio show on DI.FM which I am most pleased about (smiles). The support has been amazing, I would like to thank everyone one who has helped me get where I am... without them, I would not be here.

This does of course mean as an artist you too are travelling about quite a bit as a DJ also, your favourite venues and events of 2008 so far and in answering that – what’s coming up?

Kiddstock and Ministry Of Sound have been the highlights of 2008 so far, simply because of the atmosphere at both events. Kiddstock was off the Richter scale! Ministry Of Sound in London was a very nice venue to play in; the sound quality was very clear and great crowd response. I am looking forward to the Tidy Weekender and Goodgreef 8th Birthday - Warehouse Project in Manchester. For me, these will both be nights to remember!
