EXCLUSIVE: DSI Interview With Sugarshaker!!!

The hottest new female DJ to be making waves in clubland with her brilliantly-crafted sets and acclaimed studio productions (just ask the Hoxton Whores) - here's an exclusive interview with the ass-movin', body-groovin', record-makin' Sugarshaker!!!

So.... You, the Hoxton Whores and your latest tune. How did THAT come about???

Well, myself and Lee (who I work in the studio with) picked a selection of labels we wanted to get signed to and sent out some tunes to them! Gary, from the Hoxton Whores, phoned me and asked what our plans were for 'On My Way' - at the time we had another label interested in it and also one of our other tracks but they were taking a long time getting the contracts out to us so I just said: "If you want it, you can have it!" He said that everyone in the office was singing and dancing away to it and that they would get the contracts out in the post the next day!

Have you done any productions in the past?

I've only been DJing for less than three years and producing with Lee for about two of those. I haven't worked on anything on my own yet but when you have someone as talented as Lee living across the road with his own studio, there's not really any need to set up on your own! This was our fourth production, so we had worked together for a little while before it got signed.

Are there more in the pipeline?

Yes! We have five other completed tracks - which we've not really spent much time trying to get signed - although as soon as the Hoxton Whores track is officially released on November 19th (today!) we will use that as leverage for the others!

How long have you been DJing and producing for?

I spent five months learning to mix (vinyl as opposed to CD's by the way!) and played out for the first time on New Year's Eve in 2004 - so almost three years and producing for about eighteen months.

We hear that the vocals on your latest tune are yours? See yourself as a future Sonique then, do you?

Oooh no! Both Lee and I write the lyrics for all our tracks together and with a lot of hard work, I manage to produce a half decent vocal - but I'm certainly no singing sensation like Sonique. I don't like hearing myself sing either which is quite funny really!

Female DJs are becoming more and more commonplace in the world of clubbing (and about time, too!), are there any particular female DJs that you look up to and take inspiration from?

This is a difficult question to answer to be honest as I've seen very few female DJ's do their thing! My inspiration comes from the music itself as opposed to other DJ's.

***AND NOW, FOR THE INFAMOUS ROUND OF MUZZ-IK QUESTIONS***

What did you do to celebrate your last birthday?

I went to Edinburgh - Ghostwalking!

When was that?

Last December - it was frrreeeezing but amazing!

And, how young does that make you?!?!

I couldn't possibly say!

What's the weirdest thing that's ever happened to you in a club?

I was asked for my autograph after a set in France! Really!! Lots of times.I don't have an 'autograph' (for obvious reasons!) - and what's that all about anyway? I had to sign A4 posters of myself - it ain't right!

What's the best night out you've ever had?

Global Gathering 2006 was absolutely amazing. I loved every minute of it. But on a par with that, was a night in the Dominican Republic. There was a nightclub on the resort we were staying at - which we thought was going to be dreadful, but on our last night we decided to give it a go. There were stilt walkers, a guy did a tightrope walk across the middle of the club and the energy and people were amazing. A really nice surprise!

What's the worst gig you ever had?

Oh.... There have been a few dire ones but nothing worse than a lack of people! I always try to make the best of those nights if I can as I like to see people enjoying themselves - whether that be 30 people or 300 people!

What's your favourite record of all time?

Just one? Uh... I can't choose - it's too difficult! Sorry!

What happened the last time you embarrassed yourself?

I peed my pants laughing!!

What can't you live without?

Laughter.

Before you were a DJ, what was the worst job you ever had?

Mucking out goats when I was eleven....

What was the last record you bought?

Last piece of yummy vinyl was a new remix of 'Everybody' by Black Box - but I can't remember the remix artist. Oops.

Who are your musical influences?

Right now, I would say John Dahlback, Jim Rivers, Chris Lake, Mark Knight and Micky Slim are featuring a great deal in my track selection. They're currently making some really amazing stuff and I can't get enough of them!

Is there anything unusual about you that we should know?

No. I'm perfectly usual!

If you had a time machine, where would you go and why?

I'd travel into the future to when I'm about 75 and look back at what I've achieved - I'd like to know I'm going to look back and smile and be proud of who I am and what I've done - so I can stop worrying about it!!

And finally, what tunes have lodged themselves in your record box and refuse to leave?

I can't answer any more questions!!!! Grrr....
