Exclusive interview with Mr. Carl Nichoson.

Ok, Carl, tell us a little about your background in the dance music industry. Where did all start?

It all kinda started when i was 16 initially as a hardcore mc, then i just drifted into the dj'ing and production side of things, a natural progression really.

So you're not only a dj, you're a producer too. What would you say is best track you've written and why?

Best track i have written i would have to say Blueprint on tidy, it was very well received by everyone and was amazing seeing it played at Magna, the euphoria was intense to say the least.

I hear you have another E.P due for release on 'Elasticman records' soon?

Yeah, 'Classic' and'Bring it Home' are next up with some rather tasty ilogik remixes, cracking set of tracks.

Any more future releases in the piepline we can look forward to?

Yeah got a few more lined up including 'Let the Music' which was a collab between myself and jody 6 on Carbon and a new one which myself and emilio have cooked up, which is looking to be a very nice release indeed.

What would you say is your current dance floor 'destroyer'?

At the mo i would have to say Pearl River which was part of the Nicholson & Fallout EP 1, a proper singalong track that gets em moving!

Besides Hard Dance, what other music do you like to grace your ears upon?
I like many genres, i listen to a varied selection of classic grooves!

What are you up to these days, apart from churning out immense tracks?

Same old really, i work in finance during the day so that pretty much takes up most of my time, but i have recently launched Presence as an event in Berkshire, which pretty much takes up the rest of the time i have.

You're the founder of 'Presence recordings', one of the biggest labels in not only the hard dance world, but covering other genres too. How did all come about?

I launched it to commerorate the late great Tony De Vit, as i felt there were too many doors closed to newcomers and thought it would be a great idea to give them an opportunity to shine, seems to be doing the trick as well.

'Carl Nicholson Recordings' is also another project of yours with a recent 3 track E.P come back. Have you any plans for that?

I think that it will be a platform in which i can evolve the Nicholson & Fallout material, plus its going to be showcasing some quality artists over the next year, all will be revealed!

Who was your main influence and did you have a idol?

My main influence were DJ's like TDV, Jon Pleased, Darren Emerson, people who at the time werent afraid to look outside the box.

So lets talk a bit about your involvment with the TdV Memorial...

How did it all start then?

It came about after i met Tony's dad Ray, i felt that it would be a fitting commemoration to a man who gave so much to so many in the time he was here.

How are you involved?

I basically help run them with various other promotions.

How did he effect your view on Hard Dance music today?

He pretty much created the genre, believe it or not when he started playing harder edged there were many who told him it would never catch on, and now look.

Do you have any plans for the trust in the future?

We will no doubt hold a birthday party here and there to raise funds for worthwhile causes, but no immediate plans.

Rumour has it that you're more chemically closer to God than anyone else in the world. You what!?
hahaha, nice of you to say so.

Who do you think are the pioneers of today and the future? Can you see any rising stars?

Well for me a pioneer is someone who does something first and unfortunately a 4/4 beat can only be manipulated so much so most things are pretty much covered, but i think Paul F, Technikal and Kidd Kao's are pushing all the right buttons at the mo.

Can you give any budding dj's and produceres any advise on sucess?

Never give up, if u have a dream, go right ahead and live it.

Where do you think the Hard Dance scene going and how has it changed in the 15 years you've been in the game?
The scene fluctuates, it has a habit of getting quite elitest, and here and there a DJ comes along and creates a vibe which becomes popular and the numbers go up.

Where do you see yourself in, say, 5 years time?
Probably still doing what i am doing now but maybe with a few more wrinkles hehe

Some people say Hard Dance is dying a death. What are your views, Carl?

People will always say this, its normally said by people who work in other genres or get bored of it because of over exposure, it will never die as every year it gets new blood which keeps it fresh.

Excellent, Carl. Thankyou very much. We look forward to seeing your name in the future.

Seeya.
