Guilt at the Seaside!
Back from 'Beefa and ready to go, Guilt nestles into its new home, The Volks Club - Brighton Beach, 21/10/2006. And Team Guilt is growing. We may have created a monster...

Now I don't know about you, but in the past when I have settled into a new home, its involved fluffy cushions and endless trips to Croydon Ikea. There was nothing fluffy about Guilt@theVolksClub last Saturday night. Apart from the after party which constituted entirely of fluffiness. Enough said…

Guilt has been almost entirely London based since its birth, sticking to favourites such as Hidden, SEone, The Factory and The Southside Bar, but now it's decided to go exploring. The Volks Club on Brighton beach is ideal. Set on two floors, the luxurious (if not a little humid!) basement proves to be an excellent location for the Team Guilt Newbies to showcase their talents and finally get the recognition they deserve. Think of Guilt if you will, as an older brother who, whilst being uber-cool and sophisticated, looks after its new younger siblings in a touching, nurturing manor that almost brings a tear to the eye. It was downstairs in the Volks that saw Jon Woodhouse, Viperfische, Formless, DJ Dobby and Zcoda make their Guilt debut and played out some blinding sets before heading upstairs after to catch Clodagh (Jon – I think I may have dragged you – I’m sorry…) do her thang.

Upstairs on Saturday night heralded the return of DJ’s Dan Warb, Benji, N-Slay and Clodagh from The White Isle and my God, did it feel gooood. Being the gentleman as ever and coming first, N-Slay warmed up his own night in inimitable style – pushing a wonderful collection of tech house into our ears with a warm finger and making the club a much hotter place before Dan jumped out of the corner and slapped on some funkier tunes to get the dance floor an even warmer place to be. Then (in a surprisingly commonly held opinion) up-sprang the piece de resistance, wee Benji. Now I’ve heard Ben play many, many times. Most memorably recently in Es Paradis, Ibiza. But this one was special. Known more for his warm up sets, DJ Benji exudes a sense of excitement whilst playing that sets a room on fire. He’s a very ‘boingey’ man anyway when he’s not behind the decks but weeks of Guilt@theVolksClub-related excitement had whipped young Benji into an almost frenzy. I won’t say he was alone in this. I licked his head halfway through his set…

Clodagh’s return to the Guilt fold was warmly welcomed by a lot of hands-up jumping around and grinning. The quote of the set seemed to be “WWWWOOOOOOHOOO!”, and to be fair, who can argue with that? Clodagh’s obvious technical ability and the fact she’s a fitty was a perfect combination to get that dance floor up to what must have been record temperatures, and bring the night to a fantastic climax. There were a few climaxes on Saturday night. Glad it was someone else’s job to stay behind and mop that floor…

Guilt returns to the Volks on December the 9th. Get your arses down there and make mental notes that this article wasn’t hype. Guilt really IS this good.

See you there.

Joey.

Don't be so touchy ya big poof! "Some funkier tunes" was a complimentary description, not a detailed analysis of sub-genres...
