If you haven't been following the rise and rise of Cool House over its three year reign of Cardiff's club and bar scene then you've been missing out on what can only be described as a phenomenon.

Cool House has come a long way since its humble beginnings in Las Iguanas, now gaining national plaudits and recognition and attracting the finest UK and international DJs to appreciative crowds every month.

The list of recent guests reads like a who's who of house music - Cool House gained a UK exclusive when Deep Dish flew over in February; a night of acid house mayhem from Josh Wink in April; and countless other memorable sets from the likes of Layo & Bushwacka!, SLAM, Peace Division, Omid 16B, and Cool House favourite Nic Fanciulli.

After the unfortunate demise of former venue the Emporium, Cool House has moved onwards and upwards, finding a new home in venues including Solus and the Great Hall (Cardiff Students' Union) and the Coal Exchange.

The popularity of the night hasn't gone unnoticed - this year's Welsh Music Awards were testimony to the hard work and dedication of promoters Damon Williams and Dave Mills, who scooped silverware for Best Dance Night in Wales and Mills' personal triumph, Best DJ (in addition to CH resident Matt Joy's gong in 2004 for 'Best Up-and-coming DJ'). On a national scale, Cool House came a close runner-up in Pete Tong's 'House Rules' for best night in the UK - well, there's got to be something left to win next year!

More than just a local success story, Cool House now brings enthusiastic clubbers from across the UK to its events - some for the music, some for the unique atmosphere everyone for a good time!

Matt Joy Biog

In a relatively short career spanning just over five years, Matt Joy has established himself as a talented DJ and Producer. In this time he has been part of the phenomenon that is Cool House, from its early days in small bars to its 1500 sell out events. Originally from Blackpool, Matt moved to Cardiff to study art in 1995. It was here he met Damon Williams who was promoting a monthly deep house night at the College Bar. These early days of what was then called 'Cool House Productions' made an instant impression on Matt and in 2000 he became resident DJ. After a series of successful residency across Cardiff's bars, most notably Las Iguanas, which arguably kick started the whole pre club bar culture in the city, Cool House's increasing popularity demanded a monthly club night. Home was the now infamous Emporium and over a three year term Joy played alongside the likes of Darren Emerson, Slam and Layo & Bushwacka; in what was widely regarded as one of the best underground clubs in the UK. Matt's trademark deep, tight, building sets became and still are a feature of Cool House. In March 2003 his ability was recognised by International DJ Magazine who reviewed a recent mix CD describing it as: "..tough but deep house, this is a set that's good enough to realise Matt's ambitions to get plays across the UK.... and with his very now house sound never veering towards the obvious, we think he could be soon popping over the Severn Bridge every weekend." Matt's ambitions were realised with bookings at some of the UKs best clubs including Tribal Sessions @ Sankey Soaps in Manchester, Circus in Liverpool, Fandango @ Turnmills in London plus Savannahs in Ibiza. He has also received high praise from Mr C, Peace Division and Nic Fanciulli for his ability to warm and work a dance floor. Such recognition has not gone unnoticed - he won the 'Best Up and Coming DJ' category at the 2004 Welsh Music Awards as well a nomination in the same year for 'Best Deep/Tech/Prog DJ' at the South Wales Dance music awards. On top of this Cool House was voted Best Night in Wales at the 2005 Welsh Music Awards, as well as the 2nd Best UK Club Night by listeners of Pete Tongs essential selection. Not content with just playing music, Matt's natural creativity and love of house music led him to start experimenting with numerous re-edits, remixes and his own productions. In August 2003 Buzz magazine reviewed a four track demo of his early material, describing as "..deftly manoeuvring modern house gear.. and highlighting 'On A Trip' - a joint track with local breaks producer Vandal of Plastic Raygun - as the stand out track. The initial success of this partnership resulted in further productions including a hugely popular track sampling the legendary Peter Sellars called 'Infamous powers'. However production wise it was his work with fellow Cool House resident, Dave Mills and local producer Shane Harris (Jack Addicts) that created one of the most exiting chapters of 2003.The track 'Sick Strings was originally an idea of Matt's based on some samples from a rock track. The finished track was distributed to all A list DJs at the Radio 1 big weekend in Cardiff and has received support from Deep Dish, Sasha, Nic Fancuilli, Tall Paul, Dirty Vegas, Lee Cabrera, and Pete Tong. The track became an instant anthem at Cool house and by the start of 2004 Tong was charting 'Sick Strings' his 3rd biggest track, as well as broadcasting it on his essential selection in November 2003 and June 2004. It has since received further plays from Radio 1's Annie Nightingale and Bethan & Huw, as well as picking up an award as 'The Best Dance Track' at the 2004 South Wales Dance Music Awards despite not even being released. Ministry of Sounds Australian offshoot, Hussle recordings, finally released it this May. The track is set to be featured on the next Clubbers Bible compilation CD, as well as interest from a major UK label. With the initial success of this breakthrough single demand for Mills and Joy production talents continue to grow. In 2004 the duo were delighted to be asked to remix the first planned single from Jean Jacque Smoothies forthcoming album. The single, called 'Over the Edge' is due for release in late 2005. Also look out for the pairs new track called Moments, Matt's new track with Vandal and plans to set up a record label.
