The magnificent estate of Ashton Court covers 850 acres of woods and grassland with breathtaking views over the city of Bristol. This historic public space is one of the finest spots to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city – without leaving it at all!

How to get there... Positioned to the West edge of Bristol’s City Centre, the estate can be accessed from the A369 Clanage Road, through Clifton Lodge, off the A369 at Abbots Leigh Road or from the B3128 near Long Ashton.

What is there to see? The gardens and grounds of the stunning Mansion, (once the home of the Smyth family), make an ideal spot for a stroll or picnic, whilst the Visitor Centre gives you an insight into the fascinating history of the estate and how it has developed, the deer parks, veteran trees and the Smyth family. There is also a delightful café in the old stable block of the Mansion – the perfect location for afternoon tea!

Plants and Wildlife - It is however, the stunning natural heritage that makes Ashton Court Estate so special – it’s a nationally important site for wildlife, insects and trees. There is both a red deer and fallow deer park – allowing you to get up close to animals that have been associated with the estate since 1392.

Trees and Woodlands - At Ashton Court you can enjoy many ancient and significant trees, including the famous Doomsday Oak and 10 different woodland areas – all with their own distinctive qualities.

The woodlands on the estate are managed for conservation, leisure and timber production. This has resulted in the development of a very diverse and mixed group of natural environments:

Rownham Plantation is a quiet wood with a spectacular carpet of bluebells in the spring, Clarkencombe is a brilliant example of ancient wood pasture with very old oak trees and Summerhouse Plantation, which is extremely close to the mansion and car parks, is full of interesting land forms and archaeology, stemming from the Second World War and the estates ‘Nissen Huts’, which were used as accommodation for American troops.

Sports - There are two 18-hole Pitch and Put golf courses, both with spectacular views across the city as well as dedicated orienteering, mountain biking, horse riding and walking trails throughout the estate. For more information on particular sports and leisure activities click on Leisure and Activities and for information on specific events held on the estate go to Events.

Famous Events - Ashton Court Estate is home to some of Bristol’s most prestigious events, including the International Balloon Fiesta, Bristol Community Festival and the Kite Festival. These events are organised by Bristol City Council, to find out more, click on bristol-city.gov.uk
