We catch up with Kym Ayres, and her rubber duck ahead of her return to Bristol Best Hard Dance event Nyce1 Unleashed, you will be able to catch Kym Ayres, Lisa Pin Up, VinylGroover, Scott fo Shaw and many, many more at The Callum Appeal Fundraiser, with Nyce1 Unleashed & Friends on Saturday 12th May 2008 @ Blue Mountain Club, Bristol.
Kym thanks to agreeing to be interviewed by Nyce1 Unleashed…. Before we get into the usual questions, lets find out a bit more about you…
· First off as way of introduction could you please give us a quick rundown of the following: Your age, location, star sign, Clean driving License and favorite TV program from your youth…
Right now – 23, in my living room in Bournemouth, Taurus, clean (provisional) license, and… Ummm…. Bucky O’Hare I think!!
· Apart from DJing what other interests do you have… and what job did you have before you become a superstar DJ.
I worked in a sandwich shop for 2 years, then for South West Trains, then until recently Slinky, but it all got too much for me working all week and all weekend, so right now my other interests include decorating the house and training to cycle to Paris which I am doing on July 2nd to raise money for the youth cancer trust… so if anyone would like to sponsor me you can do so at www.ustgiving.com/kymayres
· Who is the most famous person you've ever met and how, and is there someone you haven't met yet that you would like to?
Probably the Backstreet Boys (legends) and/or Ryan Giggs.
· How did you get into the hard house scene in the first place
I worked behind the bar at the Opera House so got to witness Slinky nights before I even realized I liked the music!!!
· When was the stage in your life when you though "this is it, Ive actually done it - This is big time!" Ill let you know when I get there!!
· How do you see the scene at the mo with big promotions putting on Huge lineup's for next to nothing e.g. Slinky @ the syndicate/good greef Cardiff. Paying such little money to see these big brands and big Dj's is surely undermining the artist's and the branded promotion?
I don’t think it undermines either. Having worked at Slinky for a long time we always wanted to put on the best line up for the clubbers as possible without taking the piss by over charging. People don’t always have a lot of money and drinks in clubs are super expensive so it’s good to drop the price where possible!! It’s not that long ago that clubs didn’t charge ravers to go in and mosh!!
· What about your spare time? Do you get much time to chill out when not producing music and DJing?
Ha… now I don’t work in the day I get LOADS!! It’s great!!
· What do you think was your highlight in 2007, obviously playing for us in the middle of last year was one, but what about another!
Last year was a crazy year for me. Not only did I get to be resident on the Tidy Boys Big Night Out tour, I also got signed to Tidy, was runner up in the Best Track category at the hard dance awards, but I also got to spend a majority of last summer playing in Ibiza, I Made my festival debut at Creamfields and Escape into the Park and got a main room set at the Tidy Weekender. All in all a pretty good year I think!!
· You seem to playing out all the time. Do you ever get the chance to go out clubbing yourselves, if so where do you go?
I still go out a lot but I try not to travel about as much as I used to before I started DJing professionally. Lucky enough for me there are a lot of amazing clubs and nights in Bournemouth including Slinky and the Opera House in general, Frenzy, Destiny, Resonate, Implosion, Hardcore Marrows, Firesky and Crank. Why go anywhere else!!!
· Kym what’s coming up for you at the moment? Any releases or forthcoming news that Nyce1 Unleashed should know about?
My new single ‘Take it Easy’ is being released in May and Amber and myself are mixing a disc of the forthcoming Keep it Tidy album… Exciting!!
· And finally Paul Compulsion (dj) wanted to know… would you marry me and start a cheese farm with me in Dorset? We can make cheeses of all kinds and roll them down hills and through puddles & train them to fight like Canadian bears & make millions then move to France and buy a castle. What do you say to this!!
I love cheese so I’m game. I think cheese should be its own food group. Although I’m a bit adverse about rolling them through puddles…. What a waste of good cheese!
Thanks Kym - we will see you all at Nyce on the 12th!!
