This article is about Pukka Up @ Brownstone in Bristol (UK), Fri 02 Dec 2005
Friday 2 December is set to be the biggest party night in Bristol this side of Christmas as Sir Norman Jay graces the decks for the second time in as many months at Pukka Up, Brownstones funky Friday night session. This event also marks the launch of Brownstones new extended opening hours. You can now party and drink until 3am every Thursday, Friday and Saturday so there’s even more reason to get up and get down to Brownstone!
Norman is a self confessed 'Beatle' baby born in Notting Hill, London of West Indian parents, the young Jay had unwittingly nurtured latent DJing ambitions even from the tender age of eight. By the late 70's, he had become an avid collector of American black music enthusiastically collecting labels like Motown, Atlantic, Stax, Prelude, West End and Salsoul disco including his passion 'The Sound of Philadelphia'. He teamed up with his brother Joey and built the now famous Good Times Sound System playing out at the Notting Hill Carnival to critical acclaim and this was the start of a DJing career that is truly ledgendary and includes being named in the Queens Birthday honours list with an MBE for “services to DJing and music”. He is also without doubt the celebrities DJ, playing for the likes of Mick Jagger at his 5Oth birthday party, Robert Di Nero, Michael Caine, George Michael, Will Smith, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Jamiroquai and many more.
Pukka up has gone from strength to strength at the ober cool late night city centre destination since launching in April of this year, and with the promise of guest DJ’s like Norman on a regular basis things can only get better!
