This article is about Pukka Up Miami Launch Party @ Brownstone in Bristol (UK), Fri 10 Mar 2006
Collaborating just over two years, Disciples of Sound are already one of house music’s most exciting artists. Their scorching sets and top production are receiving massive support from the biggest djs in the business, Steve Lawler, Seb Fontaine, Seamus Haji, Michael Gray, Trophy Twins, Mark Knight, Shapeshifters, and the big man himself, Carl Cox. We manage to pin the duo down for a few questions before they reach for their record bags and join Pukka Up for the Miami Launch Party @ Brownstone.
Hey Rob/Junior
Hi Gem.
How are you both?
We’re fine thank you. Enjoying the time to sit down, take a rest, and talk to you.
I hear you’re busy busy busy busy at the moment?
Yeah things are going crazy at the moment. Our feet have hardly touched the ground in the last six months, and it’s going to get a lot busier. We’ve got a lot of new remixes on the way as you know, some of our own tracks, and we’ve got our new record label called Red Recordings that we run with Kid Lopez that’s getting alot of attention from everyone.
Give us a description of your sound.
House music baby! Hahaha. We would probably call it fat bottomed funk. It’s sexy enough for the girls, but tough enough for the boys. We like our music to have a dirty edge to it – bass lines that make you scrunch your face up when they kick in. As we play nights that vary from Pukka Up right through to Ministry Of Sound, we have to be able to diversify our sound somewhat, so we try not to label our sound too much. More and more djs are playing tracks out of their comfort zone, and we do the same. It keeps the crowd guessing.
So you’re coming down to Bristol in March for the Pukka Up Miami Launch Party – it’s been a while since you guys have played at a Pukka Up night hasn't it.
It’s been too long! We’ve missed you guys! We’re really looking forward to the night as we always have a great time down in Bristol. People don’t give the city the credit it deserves – there’s a fantastic house scene in Bristol and some of the coolest people around, and every time we play we always end up meeting some great new friends and getting dragged to some random after party once the night has finished. Most of all we’re looking forward to hooking up with the Pukka Up crew – we’ve been playing for you guys for around a year and a half now, and every time we all meet up it goes off.
What is it for you that makes Pukka Up different to playing at other events?
The Pukka Up Girls! Hahaha! No seriously…no matter where we play for Pukka Up we feel like we’re playing for friends rather than for promoters, We’ve built up a great working relationship with you all, and Pukka Up were giving us gigs at a time when we really needed them, in order to help build our profile. We trust the Pukka Up team in booking us for great gigs in the same way that we feel the Pukka Up team trusts us to deliver every time we play. Ultimately we feel like we’re surrounded by friends every time we play for you.
So tell me about Miami – what have got going on over there this year?
The perks of the job eh? We’re going to be very busy over there promoting our new remix and new track, plus we’ll be playing a cheeky gig or two. We actually fly out early on the Sunday morning due to gig commitments here in the UK. We’ll be going straight to the airport from a gig and will be landing in Miami around midday. From there we’ll be going straight to the hotel and then relaxing by the pool for a few hours. Then we’ll be heading to two parties – Subliminal to drop some stuff off with Erick Morrillo, and then to Danny Howells’s party at Pawnshop to pass him a couple of bits. The next day we’ll be playing two pool parties before flying home late Monday night. Hectic but fun.
Tell us about your future releases/production at the moment?
There’s loads happening. Our remix of Michael Gray’s “The Weekend” is coming out this summer, and is tipped to be big in Miami. We’ve just finished a remix of Michael’s new track as well called “Borderline”. Our remix of the new Trophy Twins track “Anarchism” is coming out Red in the next couple of months – this has been Steve Lawler’s most played track ever which is quite surreal. Right now we’re working on two brand new remixes – one is on The Bombdogs track “I Cant Explain” for Steve’s new Viva label and the other is for a group called Russian Roulette on a track called “Na Na Na”.
Who or what have been your inspirations throughout your career?
Steve Lawler inspires us in every single way. Every time we go and see Steve play, he stamps home why he’s the best and why he was resident at Space On Sundays for so long. His sound and style are unique and he has proven that with hard work and dedication you can go all the way. To have a dj like Steve playing all our production and supporting us in the way he does is amazing, and he’s the first dj to receive anything we finish in the studio. The word NO also inspires us – we’ve heard it so many times since first starting out just over two and a half years ago. It made us want to turn those NO’s into YES. And now that’s happening – events that said they would never book us are now chasing us for bookings. But we’re not smug about it…that’s just the nature of the beast, and we’re just happy they now want us to play for them.
You have worked with some very exciting djs/producers – what has been the highlight of your career so far?
There have been a few already. Playing Ministry Of Sound and Pacha for the first time was unreal, and our debut gig in Ibiza was mind blowing. Two have really stood out though. The first one was when Steve played our remix of “The Weekend” on the Essential Selection live from Mambo last August. The whole place went nuts - people were dancing in the sea and everything. The phones went crazy and the rest is history. And having Carl Cox vote Red as his favourite label of the year in the recent DJ Mag awards is something that we still find hard to take in. That was a vote of confidence from a man who can definitely be classed as a legend.
You’re back over to the White Isle playing the Pukka Up Ibiza boat parties this year - excited?
The wait is agonising. Why can’t it be summer now? Our first ever Ibiza gig was on the Pukka Up Boat party back in 2004. It was a very emotional experience for both of us. We’ve been going to the island for a while as clubbers, but to then be playing our debut set on the island, and on a boat, was like a dream. We played the last, and it was to a perfect sunset – there were even dolphins swimming alongside the boat. And then when we moored up alongside Mambo and dropped Lola’s Theme, people on the strip were all dancing. We have pictures of that gig at home – it was very special to us, and we’ll never forget it. We can’t wait to get back out there again and play the boat. The atmosphere and setting is totally unique.
So what can we expect from the Disciples of Sound in the future?
Well we’ve got all the tracks and remixes coming up. And we’re also in talks with several large management teams who are interested in looking after us. The next few months we’re going to be working towards securing a residency at one of the UK’s large clubs, and we’re also going to be hooking up with a couple of well known djs/ producers for some collaboration work. We’ve two remixes coming up for two of the industry’s biggest dance acts, and of course we have our series of Red Sessions parties that are the spin off parties from the record label. So all in all it’s going to be a busy few months ahead.
Any predictions for top tracks of 2006?
Well this is where we could start bigging up all our own tracks isn’t it? Well keep a look out for our remix of Michael Gray’s “Borderline” as well as our track “Perfect Motion” that’s tipped to be big this summer. When it comes to other artists, there are a few. The Layo & Bushwacka! track called “Ride The Train” from their new album “Feels Closer” is a cracker, as is a track called “Woof!” from a brand new artist called Baxstar. Anything coming out on the German label “Get Physical” is sure to be on top form. Last but not least, Tiga has a new track on the way called “Far From Home” that will be very big. That’s our prediction anyway!
Come and check out their productions as well as a sneaky peek at their brand spanking new remix of Michael Gray’s anthem “The Weekend” which is set to be one of Miami’s biggest tracks this year at the Pukka Up Miami Launch Party this Friday (10th March) at Brownstone, Bristol.
