To be brutal mate, I think a photo taken on a compact has to be stunning to compete with half of the ones taken with slr's. That's not too say you wouldn't get a top pic. I think you need to go for an 'unusual' picture, try to think outside the box, maybe some comedy props? I don't know, but to counter the fact that your camera is lacking in features, you need to get a really engaging picture.
