To celebrate the new year, Halogen Nights proudly presents a twelve-hour musical feast that takes a hypnotic journey through all things electro, house and techno. With a deep soulful groove from Kandybox's Kid Royale and Chris Emerson for starters, the main course sees two of the leading lights from the Berlin scene, Exercise One and Ralf Kollmann serve up a mind-bending mix of funky beats and minimal bleeps. Having both played a key role in the rise of renowned German imprint Mobilee they have built up a strong following and can be found regularly rocking the dance-floors of Europe’s major night spots including Fabric, Panorama Bar and The Loft. If that wasn't enough, for afters there's a wonky helping of bass heavy techno funk from residents Amos Nelson, James Hurley and Tim Page.




EXERCISE ONE

One is the loneliest number—unless you’re talking about Exercise One, the Berlin duo of Marco Freivogel and Ingo Gansera. Proprietors of the Lan Muzic label and frequent contributors to Anja Schneider’s mobilee imprint, the two are quickly becoming recognized as key figures in Berlin’s rapidly revitalizing techno movement and as representatives of the scene’s enduring communal spirit.

After meeting through jobs at !K7, the two soon began working together in a basement studio in Kreuzberg, where they shared the space with a rowdy crew of noisemakers—Luciano, Memo and, for a time, Jeremy P. Caulfield. It was Caulfield who kickstarted Exercise One’s career when, after hearing one of their early live sets, he encouraged them to send out demos. Shortly thereafter, they released their first 12” record, “Roll With You,” including a Jeremy P. Caulfield remix, on Mofa Schallplatten.

In 2005, Exercise One launched Lan Muzic. Its debut release, the Kitchentools EP, included tracks by Exercise One and Memo alongside a Luciano remix; the record quickly found its way into discerning DJs’ boxes everywhere. Anja Schneider supported the project on her Radio Fritz show and then invited them to record for her own label. The Easy Things EP, featuring a Duplex 100 remix, became mobilee’s fourth release. In a very short time, Exercise One have gone on to remix Sweet N Candy and Peter van Hoesen, collaborate with Italy’s Donato Dozzy, and release two more singles: the Debaya EP (mobilee) and the 12 Years EP (Lan Muzic).

With appearances at summer festivals like Melt!, Fusion and Bittersweet, and acclaimed gigs like mobilee’s pre-Sónar 2006 showcase, Exercise One’s live reputation is growing. While many computer-oriented artists vainly attempt to recreate studio productions in a live context, Exercise One work the other way around, jamming and improvising for hours on end, then editing the results into tight, focused tracks that never lose their sense of spontaneity. Over rhythms alternately supple and spiky, Exercise One layer hypnotic basslines and twisting sequences. Favoring the long view, they let their tracks stretch out, covering massive musical distances in a single easy bound. Informed by minimal, their music nonetheless refuses to hold back. They’re tricksters, no doubt, switching up downbeats and rolling out melodies like lopsided marbles, but it’s all in good fun: every game is a gift that keeps on giving.




RALF KOLLMANN

DJs, clubbers, and music fans around the world are rapidly becoming intimately familiar with the roster of Berlin’s mobilee label as its artists become driving forces in the electronic-music scene. Ralf Kollman has yet to put his name to any of the label’s productions, but his DJ sets suggest that he might just be the label’s secret weapon. By day, Kollmann runs mobilee’s operations alongside Anja Schneider. But nights and weekends he trades the desk for the decks, where he spins up driving, percussive sessions full body-moving minimal techno, resonant deep house, and the occasional curveball. A Ralf Kollmann set combines tight track selection with even tighter mixing, and is likely to be flecked with all manner of unreleased material—one of the benefits of Kollmann’s position in the heart of Berlin’s techno nerve center.

Kollmann has been playing deep into electronic music since the beginning of the ‘90s; his early education took place as a young clubber at Frankfurt’s legendary club Omen. As a developing DJ, Kollmann’s sound was influenced primarily by early techno protagonists like Bell, Hawtin, Robert Hood, and DJ Funk and labels like Chain Reaction, Relief, Peacefrog, and M-Plant. You can hear those roots in his sets today, where the newest of the new rubs up against stone-cold classics. Kollmann holds a monthly residency at Berlin’s Weekend club, where he and Schneider have created a platform for labelmates and like-minded musicians to explore their deepest, most hedonistic side. He’s also been a resident DJ at Berlin’s Watergate and WMF clubs (do we see a “W” theme developing?), and he’s a frequent guest in nightspots around Europe.
