Wicked but predictable
Mr Thing
Great set. We were very impressed by his selection and mixing. The set was "dedicated to James Brown" which on the night meant that he spun a mélange of JB breaks ("clap ya hands, stomp ya feet" ad infinitum) and JB influenced tracks, most of which contained samples from his earlier work. This thumping and funking was a great way to kick the night off for us. The early attendees went crazy.

Brad Baloo (half of The Nextmen)
It was always going to be a good set, and I have to admit to singing and profusely bopping along to pretty much everything he played, but pretty much every track appears on one of their 3 mixes that have been released on CD. Even the more interesting contrast mixes such as AC/DC with Missy Elliot laying down Get Ur Freak On are a bit old for me. I do concede that it's unfair for me expect constant inventiveness though, like perhaps a live band shouldn't play their previous album material. It did however dampen my opinion of The Nextmen. I was essentially expecting a live version of their mix albums, and all i got was a rehash.

Yungun made a few non-committal interjections, but set against having seen Mad Skillz MC for Jazzy Jeff last year, it was almost as if he wasn't there at all.

Sub Focus
As you might have guessed I came for the first two DJs, but i'm partial to the occasional bit of DnB, and it was quite pleasing, although as with all gigs where you're standing right by the speakers, the MCs were just a muffled monotone garble. Again though in all fairness I prefer DnB without daft speed garage style MCing. One great tune that luckily my mate caught on his mobile is on my list of tracks to get hold of.

OVERALL
A good night, very much worth the £8 i paid to get in, and the loss of function i had in my vocal chords upon leaving the club, but it could have been better. Something new next time please Brad! (and apologies for that drunken rant when you were having a break)
