hmmm, for example, if one of your mates was talking quietly to a girl in a bar/club, and you & the boys clocked him, you would describe him as 'trying to give that bird the claw'....

In Tom's case, the girl would have walked off sometime before anyone had an opportunity to noticed he was actually talking with a bird, and even if he happened to mention off his own back that he had been talking to girl, generally you wouldn't believe him....

so describing Tom as 'trying to give a bird the claw' wouldn't really ever come about....
