Steve Redux

Although a smelly indie boy in his formative years, Steve soon realised that the music had its limitations when it came to raving; thinking there must be more to clubs than waiting for the occasional Chemical Brothers record, doing some poppers and jumping up and down for five minutes.
He’d always had a love of hip-hop and after selling his car for a set of decks he taught himself to mix by cutting backwards and forwards between Cypress Hill’s ‘Insane in the Brain’ and Gangstarr’s ‘Just to get a Rep’ continuously until his family, friends and neighbours all wanted to cut him.
Gigs in Leeds, where he went to uni, soon followed but as his tastes got harder and faster his extended backroom sets began to be slightly inappropriate. The hip-hop and funk he played early on fitted the bill, but – no more used to the free booze perk of djing than he is today - as the night wore on the drunkenness, rave classics and amateurish spinbacks all increased to dangerously high levels. There were still a few people who didn’t mind, though – he played at a few fun things, including the first-ever Technique (now one of the biggest nights in the country).
By now he’d met dj/promoter Pete Kirk, who he’d worked with on the uni paper and blagged a good few gigs off. Their paths crossed again in Bristol soon after and together they started a short-lived night at the Elbow Room called Desperate, featuring mainly Guns ’n’ Roses and stupid bootleg mixes done on the fly. A CD of these mixes got them into the final of a Kiss DJ competition, which they won, and all hell broke loose. As the Outlaws they djed in Ibiza (including impressing their way into a set on the Space terrace, then staying up all night and missing it), at Glasto and the Glade, and released a mix album and mash-up 12”. Then they, with junior rave casualty Charlie 57 (aka Apegg/Clark Kunt), started the behemoth that is Giant Robot in August 2003.
But you can have too much of a good thing, particularly when it’s gone bad some time ago, and Steve left the Outlaws in 2005. Turning his attention fully to Giant Robot he carved a niche out for himself as the one who plays less rock’n’roll and techno than the other two and inflicted a few rapturously received solo dj mixes upon some impressionable ears. Around this time he became one of the founders of the annual Unity mega-rave, a huge showcase of Bristol’s best clubnights that’s torn the city’s biggest club a new arsehole the last three years in a row.
Since putting the Robot on hiatus in 2006, he’s become a resident for BlowPop and peddled his wares all over the shop as a DJ of fortune, cherry-picking the best bits of house, breaks, techno, hip-hop and rock’n’roll in an attempt to keep the kids jumping up and down. Sometimes it even works.

Justin Gettings

Born in Calgary, Justin Gettings lived in Canada for six years before moving to Guernsey in the Channel Islands with his family. It was in Guernsey that Justin first became fully immersed in sound. Having been fully bitten by the musical bug, Justin later enrolled on a music tech course in the West Counties very own City of Bristol.

It was here that Justin started promoting one of the cities most popular club nights "Buoyancy". Buoyancy has been successfully putting on events on boats, in clubs, under bridges and in forests, attracting the crème de la crème of party purveyor since 2003. Still going strong Buoyancy has some extremely exciting parties planned for 2008…. In this time Justin has had the pleasure of DJing along side some of the most innovative and talented DJs and artists around including, Jimpster, Touche, Spirit Catcher, Justice, Jody (Way out West), Chris Duckenfield, Jamie Anderson, Switch, Anni Mac, Ame, Luke Solomon, Style of Eye, Riton, Ben Watt, Silver City to name just a few!

Using these influences to his full advantage Justin has expanded his knowledge into music production and is currently collaborating on joint projects with Jamie Anderson (Made to Play/Fixia/Rekids), AJ Scent (NRK/End Recordings) & Lukas (Players Paradise/Dirt Crew) as well as concentrating on his own material which has been described as “a fusion of techy, glitchy goodness, sometimes deep, sometimes epic but always maintaining the fundamental element of groove”. With Justin’s first solo release on Quimika Records under his JG Alim guise being played on dance floors from Stockholm to Santiago and with future releases pencilled in for later in the year this is one space definitely worth keeping both eyes on in 2008.

Jackov and Kalendar

Take one DJ with 10 years experience in Drum n Bass, Garage and Breaks and team him up with a fresh Hip Hop, Scratch DJ and what have you got?
You’ve got yourself a party that’s what!
Jackov & Kallendar teamed up near the end of 2005 while running their first night ‘Aurally Funked’ and Kallendar decided to do some tricks over Jackov’s Breaks set, from then they would not have expected to be as busy as they are today in 2007, Playing sets jam packed with Hip Hop, Breaks, Garage, DnB, acapellas, samples and scratches.
First the residency at the Blast came and that literally ‘Blasted’ their names out there, more nights got in contact and at present they have residencies at 4 other Bristol nights including Byte which has proven to be one of the best around.
Today they also run ‘Bagman’ which is a night emphasising on UK Hip Hop and co-run ‘Launch’ which deals with Drum n Bass, Breaks, Electro and Garage.
With guest slots and residencies rolling in constantly it’s no wonder that Jackov & Kallendar are some of the busiest guys in the Bristol music scene.
The next step for the duo is to create some of their own tunes and that will be only a matter of time.

Luke Malcher
