Chemical Records Battle of DJs interview #5 - Student Winner: DJ Trick-E

This article is about Chemical Records Battle of the DJs @ Timbuk2 in Bristol, Tue 05 May 2009

1. What's your connection with the Bristol dance music scene? Where are you from?

Originally from the Kent Surrey area now live near oxford and at uni at Bristol UWE, my connection with the Bristol dance scene came upon too much raving! Now slightly more settled I spend more time mixing, playing out and working on producing tunes!

2. What was your take on the competition? What about the winner(s)? How could the competition be improved?

The competition was a great idea to find new talent. So many comps I have done have been mixes over the internet which does not show true potential and skill, when a set is live it makes the whole thing more fair! I'm very happy to be one of the joint winners in the comp along with Chamber and Neil Scott (who I still don't think I've met yet). The only thing that could be changed were the set times, half an hour to get into a set is not really enough but with the amount of competitors that would be hard. Also, Timbuk2 as a club need to pull their finger out and sort out there equipment. In the final I had many technical issues which were not necessary, especially under the pressure!

3. How easy is it to go from DJ'ing in your bedroom to regularly in clubs? What is the best way of going about it?

If you know you want to do it then just do it I say! Its all about entertaining the crowd so maybe when you first play get all your mates down to support you and get honest feedback. Promoting yourself is hard, long work, but worth it in the end.

4. What are your thoughts on DJ genres and formats for mixing tracks?

What ever suits you really, I don't like to judge! I knew I loved dnb so that what I mixed. I would never change genre because of a change of fashion which is what many people do and in turn they go nowhere! Stick to what you love! And I love vinyl always will!

5. What are you up to at the moment? What have you got in the pipeline? And has the competition made a difference?

Just running Dirty Note with Tufflove at the moment, we have our first night at MOTION this weekend. As I came joint first, Bloom is on the cards! Since then I have had several bookings!

6. What would be your dream line up for a club night? Who would you invite and where would you hold it?

Any hospitality lineup in Ibiza, I think it would go down a treat!

7. How do you see DJ'ing evolving next?

I think mags like Mixmag and DJ mag divulge on issues like this too much with all this mental new stuff that is available! Keep it simple, keep it old
skool and remember its about the music!
