1: Well thanks for taking the time to do an interview with me, how is Spenno in general?
Hi mate, yeah, life is really good thank you, busy as ever, and Ipswich are not bottom of the Championship anymore!
2: Silly questions first, Did you ever fancy you teacher at school?
Hell yeah! My French teacher was fantastic! She was really cute! I bumped in to her in a club, when I was about 18, I tried getting somewhere, but she gave me the windsock treatment - she blew me right out!
3: Well how did you become a MC and what inspiration do you look up to?
In our area a few lads I hung around with had decks, and I didn?t. When we used to have a 'Mixup' I used to fool around on the mic, whilst they went on the decks. I have great memories of that. I look up, and have respect for every single MC in the underground scene, you get inspiration from everyone.
4: As we all know every MC has a lyric that everyone knows, But what?s your best one? How often do you make up new lyrics and how long does it take you?
I have hooks in my head all the time, so I have to write them down, or record them on my phone, whilst driving home. To be honest, when I get the inspiration to write something, I get it down, and then spend all week practicing. I have had some seriously dodgy looks, whilst waiting at the traffic lights, cos I?m practising in my car on the way to work!!
My fave at the mo is...
"We?re surviving in the culture from the 1990?s
Underground music is our true identity
We had all night parties in farmer?s fields
Buzzing with ya mates was such an appeal
Now we?re supported by suits, and super clubs
D.J.?s mixing C.D.?s, instead of Vinyl and dubs
Things have evolved, but the reason is still the same
Hardcore ravers, in a hardcore rave"
5: I have heard a couple of rumors saying you are quite handy on the ones and twos what do you think? Have you ever thought about starting a DJ career?
Seriously???! Ah that?s great, thank you! I?d love to play just one set at a big event! I do have CDJ?s at home, and lets be honest, we all stand in our bedroom, on our decks, wishing we were Darren Styles!
6: As we all now you have produced/co-produced a handful of tracks but a lot of hardcore producers, DJs, MCs often play around with different styles of music is there anything you would be interested in producing other than hardcore?
Erm, I?d love to write a track for the other 'Boss' - Bruce Springsteen. I grew up listening to him at home. My Mum and Dad always had one of his LP?s on, and I still love those old records today. He is a legend, so I?d love to write something for him. It?d probably be pants though!
7: What do you love more producing and seeing ravers go mad to your tunes? Or hosting a rave?
It does send a shiver done ya spine, when you see ravers singing along to tracks that you?ve written (Especially 'One Day' my new one forth coming on Ufology, as it was the most personal tune I?ve done, and it was straight from the Heart) However.. First and foremost, I'm an MC, and the feeling when you step on is just immense, the rush of Adrenalin hits you at a 1000 miles an hour. I hope I continue to get that feeling for a few more years to come!
8: You do a lot of work with Epidemik and Ufology, have you ever thought about starting something off on your own at all?
Well, I?ve worked on and off for Epidemik for five years, and without them, and Grant in particular, I wouldn?t have got as far as I have, that?s for sure. As for Ufology, well I?m lucky that Jason UFO has signed some bits from me. As for my own projects, I simply don?t have the time, as I still have full time job. I?d love to do that though, that would be great Hardcore 24/7! I?d never get bored of it!
9: You have showed your face on many raves and parties but which event will stay in your mind?
There?s so many, 1st time at Sanctuary, the last time there as well, the 1st Hardcore Awards, but the best was in Poland in 2004, it was amazing 1500 people going mad to Hardcore in a Foreign country is a sight that we stay with me for a long time. The best bit was when they were all singing along to 'You?re Shining' Brilliant!!!
10: A lot of people are saying that the hardcore scene is getting very dry and bland, what would you say about this and what would you change?
Nah, There?s loads of variety out there, end of! It?s up to everyone in the scene to help those with talent, whether they be artists, producers, whatever, to get their material, and name out there. This keeps the scene fresh.
11: As the same with anything these days, would you say people expect a lot more from a MC these days more then say back in the 90s?
Yeah, they are a massive part of any line up, especially at the big events. I know that there?s a certain element that don?t like MC?s, but they are part of our culture. I think Storm was the 1st MC to come up with 32 bar Rhymes, and get the crowd chatting along, and then with crowd interaction also. He set the standard, and the likes of Whizzkid, Wottsee, etc. stepped up to the new standard. Without wishing to sound too controversial, the premier league MC?s now are on stage for all the right reasons, and they clearly love the music. Sometimes, in the old days certain people looked bored, and would rather have been MCing to D&B.
12: So when you're not MCing or Producing, what do you do in the real world?
Well, during the week, I still work full time, as a recruitment Consultant. I also see my mates who I grew up with, cos they stopped liking Hardcore round 97/98, and they hate it now... GRR! And obviously watch the mighty Tractorboys, when ever I get the chance.
13: How did you first get into the hardcore scene and what made you want to be apart of it? Why are you hardcore?
I got in to Hardcore, after listening to what I thought was chart music, in the summer of 92. I?ve stayed with it, ever since, even in the dark days. I?m hardcore, cos firstly I love the energy and euphoric feel to our music. I also believe in the culture of our scene, PLUR etc etc! For example, you could be in a rave in Birmingham, or London, and be in a safe environment, and yet outside the club, there would be drunken beer boys fighting, carrying knives and stuff. The Hardcore scene is great for creating a feeling that you belong to something truly special.
14: As a DJ myself and promoter, I always say I don?t listen to hardcore, Im part of hardcore! Youre hardcore or you're not. What would you say?
Once you get in to hardcore, your motto should be 'HTID'!
15: So what?s next for MC Spenno in the year to come??
Well, I just hope that I continue to get booked every week, get some more tunes out on Ufology, and the ultimate would be to play at a premier league event, say Slammin or Uproar. I?ve done the smaller rooms at these events, and to play main stage would be awesome!
16: Last but least any thing you wanna plug or spam??
I?ve got a few, hope you don?t mind...
