Bryan kearney Collision Interview

For those not yet familiar with your DJing, how would you describe your style?

I've always described my style as being based on energy and the unexpected. Full on driving trance accompanied by relentless techno but i've also been known to drop other styles in along with the usual stuff i play. I always try to do something different to what everyone else is doing and i always try and play as many tracks as i possibly depending on the amount of time that i have.

What do you think has been central to your success so far?

I'd like to think of myself as a clubbers dj/producer, by that i mean i know and understand what really works on the dancefloor.I'm still an avid clubber and if im not djing in a club well then im on the other side of the dj box on the dancefloor.I honestly cannot remember the last weekend that i wasn't in a nightclub. I'd have to that the subject of energy would probably be one of main reasons for the success i've had so far till now whether be within my own productions or from when i'm when djing, there will always be a serious amount of energy associated with Bryan Kearney.

Have you always been musically influenced?

I've always been a massive music fan but became addicted to dance music as a whole in the late 90's and i can honestly say that my enthusiasm for everything got to with dance music is as strong if not stronger than when i started out. The most ridiculous thing ever said to me by my mother was that 'it was just a phase and that i'd grow out of it'. She could not of been more incorrect.

What was your first big breakthrough as a producer?

I suppose the major breakthrough which really brought me to the forefront was 'Exactly, my track with John O'Callaghan, which in all honesty has turned out to be a phenomenon. We knew when we were making the track that is was going to be big but we had no idea how successful that it would go on to be and how quickly it became regarded as a classic. It's something that myself and John are unbelievably proud of. Other tracks such as Restricted Motion and also my remix of Lost Emotions also helped me to break onto the scene.

What is your most memorable performance? Where and When?

To be honest i've had so many amazing and wonderful nights in nightclubs which i've been blown away by but the absolute pinnacle would of had to of been last years Planet Love Festival. Its has being my main aim in life to play at a music festival, especially in Ireland, so for it to happen, in a venue that is no more than 10 minutes from where i live was unbelievable. Everything just went perfectly and the arena i was playing in was absolutely rammed with people even climbing up on stage to join in, it was absolutely crazy. I dropped my remix of Phlash - Frantic Theme, a remix i made especially for the day and one which nobody even knew that i had made and i have never seen a reaction like it in my life. It was an amazing day and i had a wonderful hangover cure of flying to Ibiza the next day for two weeks.Stuff of dreams.

In the past a lot of the more popular artists have branched off into other genres once they have built their reputations, do you see yourself doing something similar?

It's something i have already started and it's something that is essential if you want your music to remain fresh. I've made techno tracks in the form of More To Life & Punchline, trance tracks like Exactly, Restricted Motion are in the trance mould and also entered into the Tech House sound with my track 'The Walrus'.
Certain people are happy to stick by their formula of happy in your nappy lets hold hands bollox trance but that's not for me at all.Vareity is the key and the best example of this is John O'Callaghan. He can make any form of music and the quality never gets lower and the success he is currently enjoying is all down to the amount of work he has put in over the last few years and it's a pleasure to see him continually climb the ladder. The man is a genius.

Do you plan out your sets or do you play to the crowd’s reaction?

I never ever plan what i'm specifically going to play but i'd always have a fair idea of what way i'd like to take the set before i play if that makes sense. It's all dependent on the type of club your playing in and also the type of crowd. I tend to play a little bit harder and techier when in Ireland and a little bit more epic and full on when in the UK, but then again, your dancefloor decides what you have to play and it's your job to get them moving.

With all the media that is involved in the industry now, do you think image has become as important as the music a DJ plays?

It should always be about the music but your image, your individuality and the attributes that set you apart from everyone else is paramount to the amount of success you will achieve. But, at the same time, networking sites like Bebo, Myspace and Facebook are also essential parts of your image etc.I'd like to think that i'm bringing something a little bit different to the scene i'm in, a fast paced, techy edged sound that not a lot of people are pioneering. I wanna be involved in this industry for years to come so hard work in your music/image is essential.

Do you think that once your image has been established you have to almost play that role from then on?

I wouldn't neccesarily say that but i think it's essential that you build upon the image you have rather than just dwelling on your current success and being of the opinion that it's going to last. You should be continously trying to get better, making better tracks, playing better sets and improving on the image that you've created for yourself. One aspect that is essential to myself is that you remain the person you are and don't start thinking that your better than you actually are and developing an attitude. You must remained grounded and realistic.

I would call your sound unique, what would you call the music that you like to play?

I play a combination of everything whether it be trance, techno, tech house, as long has it has an energetic element that i like and fits in with what i play.I love driving techno, the loops, the percussions, the rhythms, just something about it that really gets me but at the same time i love my trance aswell. I'd like to think that my productions are unique, for example, my tracks More To Life and Punchline, i can't think of another two tracks really in the same vein as them, especially Punchline. My remixes, reworks, edits are based upon the same principle as being unbelievably energetic and completely unexpected. I think my music reflects the type of person i am and my personality and this is echoed in my dj performances.

Who are other DJ´s/Producers that you respect?

John O'Callaghan would be number one. I've known John for over six years and am privellaged to have become best of friends with him. The talent that he possesses is frightening and he's gonna be the number one on the scene for a long time. He is still exactly the same person i met six years ago, success has not changed him one bit and this is a credit to himself. Apart from John, the likes of Greg Downey, Sean Tyas, Neal Scarborough, John Askew, Activa are all people i've huge respect for. It's a pleasure to be associated with such great people and to also have them as good friends. I have respect for a lot of djs/producers right across the dance music spectrum.I've a really broad interest right across the scale and to be perfectly honest i prefer going to see djs who play within different genres. It's not that i'm being disrepectful to the scene that i'm in, i just enjoy going out hearing different music and getting new ideas.I'm immersed in my own type of music all week long so it's nice to get something different into my ears. My two favourite djs are Ben Sims and Eddie Halliwell both unbelievably gifted and amazing at what they do. Ben Sims is in my opinon the best dj in the world. His sets are packed with energy, he never stops working the decks and mixer and it is impossible not to dance and to enjoy what he does. I have huge respect for Eddie Halliwell and the fact he plays nearly every track i give him gives me amazing pride in what i do.

Where do you get your musical inspirations from and what types of music do you like to listen to outside of the dance scene?

Musical inspirations come from everywhere but to be honest the vast majority of the best stuff i have made just actually happens. It's not planned but for some reason just falls into place. There's also been times when i've been in work or out and about and an idea will just pop into my head. For example, the reason i made my remix of Lost Emotions was because i had just returned from Ibiza and was going through the post Ibiza blues so i had to do something productive. Its good to see that a negative can breed a positive. To be honest, i don't listen to any other types of music other than dance. Bands don't interest me in the slightest. In sayin that there can be individual tracks/songs that i'll like for some unknown reason, might be an element within the track etc or just something that catches my attention.

It seems everyone these days is calling themselves a DJ. What do think makes a good DJ?
Do you practice at home? Or if you used too, for how long?

The defintion of a good dj is summed up in a number of qualities - ability to work a crowd, knowledge of music, interaction with the crowd and knowing what to play at the right time. I'd like to think that i have these traits. I have been djing for 8 years so i have plenty of experience. Some people may be shocked to find out that i don't actually even have decks and haven't had them for over three years. The only time i'd play them would be when i'm in a club or in a friends house etc. I know my music inside out so to be honest i don't feel the need to practice as i'd prefer to put the time i have into my productions.I love the spontaneity of going into a club and just upending it.

Do You prefer playing to a huge arena or a small private venue?

I love both because they are so good in different ways. I'm yet to play to a really massive crowd but the idea of performing in front of thousands of people is unbelievable. I love playing smaller venues because everything is so up close and interactive. You feel as though your part of the crowd and the atmosphere can be absolutely amazing. I just love djing full stop, i live for it and regardless of the amount of people there, type of club it is etc i will always try to give the same performance and put the same amount of energy into my set.I love it.

All I can say is, this man knows what works. He is an instant classic, for me Restricted Motion is my fave, heard Matt Hardwick play it at gatecrasher in 2005, absolute Euphoria all in 1 tune.
