Fuck the DJMag poll...
The Resident Advisor 2009 end of year poll is upon us. It's what the DJMag poll would be like if trance didn't exist! Techno, house, disco, dubstep and everything in between.

I think Deadmau5 is doing amazing things for the dance music world, I know quite a few people at work that I would not expect to like dance music, that get excited by Deadmau5 and have asked me if I know about him, and is there anything else like it, and I have made my suggestions...

Deadmau5 was amazing at Reading Festival, ridiculous atmosphere when he came on. Left the tent to the entire crowd singing "I remembeeeeeer" over and over again. Very special moment even if you do regard him as a popstar :)

Popstar, very talented producer and generally a genius. However I'm not really into his music.

Except by his own admission he's not a DJ. Remember his "all DJs are cunts" comment? No doubt he has talent, and his early stuff was good, but I don't like what he's putting out now. Here is a passage about DJs that take themselves too seriously in a column from their latest issue:

There was another DJ playing that night (Mixmag terrace at Creamfields) who wasn't quite so friendly. To be fair to this guy, he absolutely smashed it. It wasn't just a crowd anymore, it became a chanting, hands-in-the-air army of rapturous support.

Following the set, one senior member of our team introduced himself and thanked him for playing. To which the DJ in question replied, with a stone cold-face, "Don't know what you're talking about. I'm not a DJ." He huffily turned away, shouting theatrically to his weary looking entourage: "As if that's going to impress me - 'I'm so and so from some magazine!'."

Right, OK. Have you not just played a set for that very magazine? Didn't 'some magazine' put you on their front cover a few months ago?

Not to worry, we're always on the lookout for DJs getting too big for their boots. And if we told you we rewarded our rude DJ with a cheese sandwich alarm call delivered to his hotel room at five in the morning, would that give away hi5 identity?

generally a genius

he is not doing anything original and his music is tedious and boring , i wouldnt label him a genius but he is good at showmanship and promotion.

deadmau 5 might as milk it while he can as i cant see him being a up there for long people will soon get bored of him

I did indeed get bored of him, but I think his genius lies in how he has been far better able to market himself than any other up and coming dance producer recently and make vast sums of money so quickly. He knows very well how to construct a track which will work with the audience he is playing to, I cannot think of many better.

Though I was bored of him last year, I am delighted that he exists as he is getting all kinds of people interested in the scene that we love that would not have done so otherwise. I think the Deadmau5 phenomena is a fantastic thing to have happened to dance music as he is a stepping stone to other artists who have been producing fantastic music for decades but don't get the recognition they deserve, and he is helping them get that recognition.

My opinions on deadmau5 is that, at the beginning, he created a sound that soon became very popular and many emulated it or strived too.
Then he continued to make more tracks similar to it, and then some, and then some more, not really being any different. Which is fine, some people like to stick to their own sound.

He has sort of twisted things a little, but to be a success in this industry as a producer, you have to evolve, and i dont mean following what everyone else is doing.

Guetta is a pop star. As a dj, he smashes it, he has his own crowd and has a marketing genius behind him in his wife.

Deadmau5 has his mask thingy which is very unique. But he cant dj. He plays out live, but it means you hear only his own stuff when you see him. How boring is that gonna get real soon?

remember deadrat6? they obviously took a dislike to him too.

I guess the difference between guetta and mau5boy is that guetta remains down to earth and respects the industry and all those in it.

I dont deadmua5 is a genius. Innovator to create a unique sound at the time. A genius would be someone who could continually create new sounds that people love each time.

could you say guetta is a genius then? closer to it then mau5man :D

Ooooh I do like a bit of controversy. Only the other day I suggested that Florence and the Machine we're shit and even more controversially I had Peas with Fried Eggs for my tea.

I suppose Margaret Thatcher was shit too.......................................after all it was cool to think that at the time !??!!?!

Oh Michael Jackson he was shit.

Remember his "all DJs are cunts"

Exactly...

He's may be good at what he does which is appealing to the masses but unfortunately he's got too big for his own shoes and his attitude has lead me to loose any sort of respect I may have had for
him..

just look up Giorgio Moroder , he is a genius

Agreed! Real genius
