Roadblock w/ Norman Jay & Gareth Wyn - Thank You
I arrived at the club just before 11pm to be greeted by the sight every promoter wants to see – 150 people forming a queue three deep snaking up the high street. When I got inside I could see and hear that the club was already close to bursting. Walking into the main room there was a great vibe and the dance floor was already packed with well-dressed House Rules groovers, mostly girls which is always nice to see.

For those who haven’t been to Plan B in Brixton – you wont know why it’s built a solid reputation as one of the capital’s best clubs. Boasting an ear splitting Funktion One sound system and a cocktail list worth of an it-girls after party, Plan B is rightly held in high esteem by DJs, music lovers and clubbers alike. So seeing as this is currently the club where House Rules hangs its headphones – make sure we see you at the next party!

Back in the main room Haran de Lucas, (House Rules resident since birth) had the crowd right where he wanted them. As a promoter you put great faith in your residents and from my experience so many DJs overlook the importance of warming up a crowd properly. They just want to play the big tunes and smash the dance floor regardless of timing. Haran is a pro and the crowd were chomping at the bit come midnight when Norman Jay arrived and subsequently the reception for his set was first class – and rightly so.

Norman Jay is a massive name particularly on the London scene and to book him for our bank holiday special was an honor. If you read his pre-gig interview, you’ll know that Norman always plays music to match the crowd. So his eclectic house set was right on the money – spanning house from soulful to techno his set kept the crowd guessing and made the most of the club’s great sound. There were too many highlights to mention but hearing 500+ people with their hands in the air singing Axwell’s ‘I Found You’ is an enduring memory. The response for Norman was, as expected, electric and worthy of a true music legend.

House Rules have been fortunate enough to acquire the skills of one of the UK’s rising producer/DJs in Cream resident Gareth Wyn. Resident for Cream for five years and now making his name as a producer, remixing Duffy’s number one ‘Mercy’ and his own tune La Galleria on Paul Van Dyk’s Vandit label. Gareth took up where Norman left off and the atmosphere continued to build and come 3am when Prdya’s - Pjanoo was pumping out the roof was ready to come off.

I was playing for the last hour and half and after reading the crowd decided to take things slightly tougher towards the end as in my experience people tend to party harder on a Bank Holiday. Luckily for me, the crowd seemed to have no homes to go to and there were still a good two hundred people on the main dance floor at 4:30. Using a combination of acapellas and the odd classic in amongst some great new stuff I kept the tempo high and the vibe going right to the end when the lights came up. The customary chants for 1 more rang out and I dually obliged, opting for Aly – Us ‘Follow me’ (ATFC Remix). Afterwards as I passed through the entrance on my way out I could hear the lyrics being sung in the coat queue downstairs confirming it was the right choice.

A massive THANK YOU from everyone at House Rules to all those people that came down and made it a special night, your continued support is the reason we can book great acts like Lottie, Norman Jay and Micky Slim and continue making serious waves on the London clubbing scene. Thanks also to the DJs, security, Pearl and his team at Plan B and special thanks from me to the team here at House Rules - Kerry, Gemma, Matty, Duff, Mark, Gareth, Whaid and Haran.

I’ll leave it up to someone who knows a thing or two about Good Times to sum up the night, a true dance music legend:

Tonight was the best night I’ve had down here in a long long time” Norman Jay MBE

Looking good people.

Superbly co-ordinated by the HR team, and an interesting write-up. Nice to be reminded of some of the tunes as well, especially That's Not My Name, and there was something brilliant with cowbells towards the end of the night.

Micky Slim next... more cowbell!
