the trouble with chelmo is that everyone is so used to dukes they dont no any different but take the bank holiday weekend dukes is now opening up until 6am which i no has done well in the past but and thats a big but lol dukes is taking advance by cashing in on shit loads of money dont get me wrong i know you have to make profit but still @ least keep the clubbers happy and reading all this and other sites they dont seem to be happy @ all!

i still think chelmo should have a another club that opens to 6am and give it a chance for it to kick in and i bet you any money it will take off!
its kinda different here in bas as you got choice of 4 clubs aswell as few bars

dannyboy your rite for edwards and yates they are just as good as dukes and there drinks are cheaper so that also helps!
staff are alot nicer ok dukes hire on goodlooking staff but no offence some are thick as shit!

Well if we cant just burn dukes to the ground then it does need some good competition, 6am at another venue would be nice, people who go out to get trashed are mashed by 2 and go home people who go for the music(and to get trashed) get bored by 2 and go home, could be one reason y theres no obvious market, but there is one out there
also theres no variation in dukes music or many places in chelms, i used to go to the bars cos thats where the people are but theres no good music there, if there was a venue with differnt night held each night/weekend, eg. trance breaks DnB techno electro and inde that would be amazing, there are enough people out there that like good music to make it work. just think of all the people that go to london week in week out and theres your market!

Problem there is that most of those genres are quite specialized and you either love it or hate it. With that in mind you are going to have a different clientel each night. This means the bar has to brand and promote each night individually and frankly that costs to much. If you want something different you need to start following some of the local promos. 2funk, Funk Delight, and Funked Up are a few though there are plenty more about (there is some shameless plugging) and keep your eye open for The Purveyors launching soon. Each of the Promos have their own DJs and you just have to start supporting the ones you like. The more you spend at these nights the more nights they get to do. Money makes the world go round!

I do regually visit the 2funk night and i wrote all those different genres because i like all of them equally but i guess you are talking about the masses.

Thomas, come and say hello next time you come down to The Bar for 2Funk.

The problem we have at The Bar is the conflict between the bar and the dancefloor. By about 1.30, although the dancefloor is full, hardly anyone is still buying drinks so it is not cost effective for the place to stay open. It's free to get in, so they only make money behind the bar. We actually have a licence to stay open until 3am, but the lights always come on well before that.

It's tough DJing in there as you can get a really great response from the crowd to the music, but then nobody's at the bar buying drinks. I try to push the boundaries as much as possible, but the bottom line is, it is still a bar and not a club.....even with the lazer, smoke machine etc. lol. Sometimes you have to keep it mainstream to keep people in there, but then we don't want to be like all of the other bars in town. The regular crowd though are great, and love their tunes...got to keep them happy too!

I'd love to see a proper club venue in Chelmsford, open until late, but it would have to be an instant success or it just wouldn't survive. I'm not sure if there's a market for it. Shame, but with London so close, it's difficult to see how a club could compete with the big guns.

Pop in Baroosh and say hi. Fridays is old school and comercial stuff but Saturdays is more upfront funky house stuff. We usually get a good crowd in and I think it will be packed tomorrow.

I think we should have a survey

If there was a monthly night dedicated to house and trance in Chelmsford would you go and support it?

Invite your buddies from Essex into this.....
Lets see if we can get a big following for it..........

I would support the party

i would support it - in fact i would love to see that!!

U would need some well known DSIers supporting it for it to take off (the power of DSI is HUGE!!). Probably wouldnt b too difficult as there are a lot of Southend based DSIer's & perhaps u could run some sort of coach from there??

There's no point running any sort of night just for the sake of something new in Chelmsford tho.
U need someone with real passion & determination to bring good music into Chelmsford.

Definately a later licence or an after-party would be needed as well!!

every place you go to in CM offers the same thing

its safe and boring

there are a few specialist nights in bars like Ancient lights but nothing on a grand scale cos its too much of a risk in most managers eyes

I take it you don't go to "the" bar, Elan or Decadence then?

"the" has funky house on Fridays and Electric Disco on Saturdays. Not sure what Elan is doing these days but when I worked there I played electro on Fridays and Saturdays was more funky. Don't really know what Decadence does on Fridays but Saturdays you have Dave Valentine playing some awesome electro and their sound system is quality. Its about the only place in Chelmsford that has a sound system where you can actually feel the base on a big drop.

Im currently playing Baroosh which on Fridays is a kind of mix of old school classics and current commercial stuff. Saturdays is less commercial funky house and electro-funk.

There is also Saracens (D-Place) and Ancient Lights which are supposed to be quite good but too be honest I don't get the chance to go in there unless I have the night off. Someone else will have to fill you in on those.

Everywhere has its own market and its up to you to find the places you like and tell everyone else about them and most importantly WHY you liked them. Moaning that places are crap doesn't make them any better.

Sorry if this seems like a bit of a rant, and its not aimed at anyone in particular, but to be honest this whole "Dukes is crap" and "Chelmsford is boring" thing is getting old! Find places you like, go there, and quit whining!

Rant Over

thats exactly why i dont hardly go out in Chelms - this thread has moved on & we were talking about ways to try n bring back some music scene into Chelmsford.

Telling ppl just to go somewhere else, isn't helping! We need any local ppl to support any future potential nites to try n inprove Chelms & giv it a wider music scene

Rant Over!! :S
