Break Out's summer special rocked!
Break Out at Bohemia – Summer Special.

Although the unforgettable weather of this summer stayed true to form on Saturday 18th of August, the persistent rain and wind did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Break Out revellers who all came to Bohemia - resplendent in their crazy summer outfits - ready to party the night away.

Kid Afro – in super-bright Hawaiian shirt - made his Break Out debut warming up the main room for us and he did us all proud with his chuggy blend of house, perfect to get the heads nodding as people grabbed a drink ready for the night ahead. Since returning from Oz and meeting all the Break Out crew at our Gatecrasher event in April, Afro has been a stalwart supporter seen on the dancefloor at every Break Out from start to finish, and his set was perfectly suited to the night… we will definitely be having you behind the Break Out decks again soon Afro!

As the club started to fill up Ashley Scott took to the decks. Moving things up a level for the growing dancefloor his set took on a funky vibe perfectly suited to summer, sprinkled with a few classics to bring smiles to faces. Wearing a wicked summer straw-hat Ash’s enthusiasm and talent behind the decks are him getting well known in Cheltenham. My fave tune from his mix was the Ortega Gold remix of Stonebridge’s SOS, a fat-bass fuelled monster if ever there was one! Ashley also hosts a weekly radio show on www.housenationuk.com so make sure you check him out on a Thursday night if you need a dose of Break Out style tunes in the meantime!

For our summer special we also brought the superphat Rezonant soundsystem to room 2 in Bohemia. Baccus warmed up the revellers in room 2 with a slick mix of breaks, before making way for Jimmy Fingers whose breaks set incorporated some old classics by the Autobots alongside some fresh beats.

By this time room 2 was just as busy as room 1 and I don’t think I was the only person having trouble deciding which room to dance in, as Simon Pisani had the main room well and truly rocking with his uplifting progressive-tinged house clearly hitting the mark with all the clubbers on the main dancefloor.

Next up was my turn on the hallowed wheels of steel and I have to say it was one of my most enjoyable Break Out sets ever, the crowd were so up for it, the club was full and most of all, people seemed more than happy to stay and have it on the dancefloor rather than going outside for a fag! Mixing up a bit of prog, techno and of course full-fat bass-driven house, my top tunes of the night were the downright filthy acid-house Micky Slim remix of “Turn It Around” and my firm favourite the Minimalistix remix of “I Struggle For Pleasure”. But shock horror I was most disappointed when I realised I had ran out of time so I couldn’t play Byte Me! Time just flies when you are DJing!

Normally I have to be wrenched from the decks as I love playing so much, but I had no qualms in making way for Chris Hughes to play at Break Out. Chris has been one of our residents since June 2006 and his sets always deliver. His explosive blend of chunky, techy, electro-tinged house go down a treat and tonight was no exception!

By this time it was one in one out and despite my best efforts to bribe the bouncers to just squeeze one or two more people in, we were totally full to the brim. After dancing my proverbial socks off to some trademark Hughes tuneage and now wearing a gloriously garish Hawaiian garland around my neck, I dashed upstairs to catch the much revered Live Set by SiyTek and Rezonate, These two guys performed the week before at the 7th Sun Festival in Tewkesbury to a rapturous crowd, and as I couldn’t make that festival I was so excited to hear what these two had in store for us. And boy they didn’t disappoint. I have to say the only other time I have seen room 2 quite so rammed was back at our Break Out Xmas party……..when SiyTek was performing his first ever live set for Break Out! SiyTek and Rezonate played a live set of original tunes, using 4 different keyboards, a vocoder, a drum machine and loads of FX and it was show-stopping, jaw-dropping electronic dance music heaven!

After a quick sambuca at the bar, with a large bottle of Bulmers in hand (yes it’s true, I have no class – or a lot of class depending on how you look at it ;-) I made my way downstairs for the last set of the night, a tech-trance finale from Mark90 back to back with Nice Guy Eddy. Between them they both delivered the perfect finale, hands-in-the-air trance moments interspersed with full-on-get-your-head-down-and-stomp beats!

This was one of our best Break Out’s yet – it was great to see so many folks out and as always the crowd were wicked, lots of people getting into the Life’s A Beach theme with bright colours, sunglasses and strawhats! And credit where credit’s due, you guys nearly drank the bar dry – you all make me very proud ;-) And big-ups to all those behind the scenes who help out on the door, flyer for Break Out, take amazing photographs (big up Natalie Rodley of www.blinkofaneyephotography.co.uk and Mooman), help us lug about kit and even drive us back home to pick up stuff that we have forgotten and desperately need for the night!

And so now to quell some rumours that have been gadding about the Nham…yes, it’s true Bohemia is going to be closing down for a while in September, as it has been sold and will be going under a refurbishment in the Autumn. But don’t despair as we have lots planned for Break Out! So make sure you come and join us for our last event at Bohemia, on 31st August with ElectronicSessions – London’s most forward thinking trance night – hosting the main room and Break Out rocking room 2. With a heavy-weight line-up of progressive/tech and trance DJs including Mike Foyle (and we are very lucky to have this globe-trotting DJ, who has had several releases on Armin Van Buuren’s label Armada, come to Cheltenham), plus Cheltenham legend and Monster Tunes head honcho Brisky, London’s Chris Salt and of course Cheltenham favourites Nice Guy Eddy and Mark90 plus Break Out upstairs this promises to be an awesome event – don’t miss it! Who’s up for challenging me to a shot-drinking contest at the bar then?

And as for Break Out’s autumn plans? Well as most of you know Break Out is becoming an international party as we launch Break Out in Ibiza on Friday 7th September at the exclusive Es Vive Hotel, so book your last minute flights and come and partaaaay with us!

September 28th sees myself and Simon Pisani headline at Temple of Bass alongside none other than the legendary Sonny Wharton (his last UK gig of the year) at the Jailhouse in Hereford. Anyone up for a trip on the Team Curious minibus let me know, we haven’t done one of these for a while and it should be a wicked night out!

On October 6th come and set sail down the Thames with ElectronicSessions for one of their legendary boat parties! These events always sell out weeks in advance and are supercrazywickedmad fun! After our shenanigans on the 31st with the ElectronicSessions crew we know you won’t want to miss this!

Looking further ahead, please put this date in your diary in capitals in big thick black marker pen:
OCTOBER 26TH BREAK OUT BIRTHDAY BONANZA @ MODA
Yes, to mark the 1st birthday of Break Out in Cheltenham and my 30th (yikes!!) birthday and all the other late October birthday bunnies, we return to the VIP room of Moda to celebrate in style, so I really hope you can all join us for this one!

And finally, some very very exciting news, we are doing a big event in London at a fantastic club on 23rd November, so please keep that date free and all will be revealed soon!

Thanks again for all your support, see you all very soon!
Lizzie xx
