This article is about Viva La Diva @ The Priory in Doncaster (UK), Sat 12 May 2007
What have been up to recently?
Recent gigs have included Sankeys with Eric Prydz, Honey Club in Brighton, and the bank holiday in May is my busiest weekend to date, 7 gigs in Ireland, Reading, London, Leeds and Liverpool over 4 days!!!
How would you describe your DJing style?
A real mixture of electronic, dirty, melodic, dark, funky tech house. I love minimal but don't play it in my sets at the moment.
How did you get into dance music?
From the moment my big sister took me raving at the age of 15 with all her friends. Being at the Chunnel Club in Vauxhall dancing to hard house was the moment I knew I would be into music and clubbing forever.
Sankey’s recently announced you as their resident. How made up about that are you?
Unbelievably made up! I cried when David Vincent asked me. Sankeys is like a family, the residents are all really close. Mistress De Funk, Ellesse, Greg Vickers, Mr Vincent are all wonderful people and great DJ's. The club is, in my opinion, the best in the north (if not the whole of the UK). The atmosphere is always electric and the clubbers are really into their music. Plus I'm getting to play alongside and see some of the world’s finest DJs each month too.
What was the first record you ever bought?
A 7 inch vinyl - can't believe I'm admitting this but it was Paula Abdul 'Opposites Attract'
Who would you most like to DJ with in the future?
Dream DJs would be Carl Cox, Steve Angello, Rene Amesz, Mark Knight & Audiofly. The list is endless.
Can we expect any productions from you in the future?
Yes watch this space. I'm in the studio at the moment.
What do you like to do away from the music scene? Boxing, watch football, be with my friends and family and travel round the world.
What do you think of the UK scene right now?
There are so many genres of music at the moment. Lots of electro being produced but I'm not really in to what's being made. I think there is some great groovy filthy tech house stuff out there though and minimal music has become a lot more popular and less underground.
How do you think DJing will evolve technically over the coming years?
Technology has rapidly made a difference to djing over the last few years and will continue to evolve. The rise of ableton/vinyl scratch will continue but there will always be djs who will stick to vinyl and cds, which is cool.
What does the future hold for vinyl?
Vinyl will never fade. They’ll always be a place for it no matter what technology comes up with. Do you think the internet has been good or bad for the dance scene?
Really good. I buy almost 100% of my music online. It’s quicker, cheaper and is great for me as I've been banned from driving so I don't have to leave my house to buy records!
Whats your favourite record at the minute? Chris Barratt - Pink
and of all time ?
Too many to say. I'll chose 3 for different reasons.... 1) Delirium 'Silence' as one of the tunes that reminded me of the beginning of my clubbing days. 2) James Holdens remix of The Sky was Pink by Nathan Fake because it just simply is the most amazing and clever production with the best noises and sounds. 3) And I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan - Liberian Girl is one of my favourite songs of all time. What up and coming DJ can you recommend?
Johnny Mikes from the Ninja Cowboys. Amazing sets, very technically good and is so passionate about what he does.
Tell us a joke
2 cannibals are eating a clown. One says the other.... 'Does this taste funny to you?'
What is the strangest thing you have seen in a club?
Too many too mention, but that’s just part of the clubbing experience!
What is your favourite & least favourite thing about your job? Favourite thing is seeing clubbers have the best time dancing to the music u love as well. Worst has to be the travelling. I can't until time machines are invented. Most memorable moment of your career so far?
Hopefully my career’s only just beginning so I’d prefer to look back in a few more years time & tell you then! How would you reply to somebody who said ‘The only reason why Kate Lawler gets sets is because of Big Brother’?
My nice response would be to tell them to come & actually see me play. My naughty response probably couldn’t be printed!
What’s the most unusual place you have ever played a gig in? Most gigs have been pretty normal standard bars/clubs. I played in a converted church in Banbury, which was quite weird actually! The decks were up in a wooden box, which I'm sure the priest used to read prayers from!!!
You have played all over the world but what is your favourite club to DJ in?
Sankeys is my favourite club I've ever played. The atmosphere, the people, the staff, the lights, darkness and dirtiness of the place is just unbeatable.
What would you like to do before you die?
DJ at every club in DJ Mags top 50 clubs in the world.....
What does the future hold for Kate Lawler? Hopefully more gigs, more gigs abroad, music making, my own night launching, some more business ventures that I want to be kept secret for now, and lots of fun, partying and love making. Woo hoo!
Kate will be appearing at Viva La Diva on Saturday May 12th @ The Priory, Bradford Row, Lazuras Court, Doncaster on Saturday May 12th. For more info see www.myspace.com/clubvivaladiva or catch up with all of Kates goings on at : www.katelawler.net/www.myspace.com/djkatelawler
