Music : Funky House, Soulful House, Deep House, Funk and Disco

Steve started DJing in 1985, up till then he had just been collecting records due to being heavily into the early 80’s break dance scene (also, his old man was a 70’s disco/funk DJ, so as a kid he spent most of his Saturday’s in record shops), this is where he got the bug for mixing due to listening to DJ’s like The Glove, Afrika Bambaataa, Terminator X from Public Enemy & the English DJ Greg Wilson (DJ God). In the early days the house/acid house scene was unknown in all the clubs in the south/south west as they were all your regular glitzy clubs playing just chart music.Steve and Lee Burridge (Tyrant Records) started a club night back in about 1989/90 along with DJ’s like Mark Pritchard from The Jedi Knights and things progressed from there. Lee went off to Hong Kong to progress to his megastar status he holds today, Mark formed the Jedi Knights with Tom Middleton and Steve went off to sunny Bournemouth and ran club nights in Madisons. (formerly Madison Joe’s).
During the early nineties the south/south west scene was heavily influenced by the free party scene (acid house parties), so most of his time was spent playing at these events along with club nights around the country in places like Nottingham, London, Leeds, Bristol, Plymouth etc… During these times he’s played alongside DJ’s such as Sasha, Jon Digweed, Jon Da Silva, John Kelly, Smokin Jo, Carl Cox, Judge Jules, Tom Middleton, DIY Crew etc…
Around 93/94 he went to the states and played in clubs with DJ’s such as Cle (Naked Music), Sean (Tomato Records) & the ‘Wicked DJ’s’ etc, this was a very exciting time out there as the scene was mostly club based and they wanted to introduce a party scene, very much like the free party scene that was happening in the U.K, so they would go around find big warehouses and rent them out and hold massive parties, regularly playing to crowds of 10,000.
Since then Steve’s mostly been DJing around Exeter (The Cavern, Pheonix, Amber Rooms, etc) Southampton (Boat Party’s and various clubs) Wales (various clubs and bars) and more recently ran his own night called – Cult. This was set up back in 04/05 due to the emergence of the electro/electroclash scene which was coming out Germany, heralded mainly by DJ’s such as DJ Hell and by bands like Fischerspooner etc… This was a very successful night and went for about a year. Most of his time is now spent in the studio, producing and playing local clubs, bars and internet radio such as danceairwaves.net, frisky radio & proton radio & abletonlivedj.com.
Music styles range from disco/funk/funky house/deep house/tech house/club house although anything goes really as long as it’s a bit different to the norm.
Influences are all the above, but most importantly people like – Greg Wilson, Jeno from the Wicked DJ’s in San Francisco, DJ Harvey & of course by clubs such as The Hacienda, Shelley’s, the Wag and Club UK.
What should you expect on the night?
Funk, house & club house all with a twist.
£3 all nights
