This article is about CREAM IBIZA 08 THE FREEMASONS/THOMAS GOLD(Exclusive from Munich)/MISS DIVINE(La Vita)/NICK RAFFERTY + ONE LOVE + MORE @ Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone (UK), Sat 01 Mar 2008
ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING AT CREAM IN FRONT OF THE HOME CROWD? Absolutely! The Fierce Angel gig was excellent and so many faces were out - people we’d not seen for a long time as well as all our regulars and seasoned clubbing veterans. Plenty of new faces too which is always good and we know they had a good time - the place was still packed at 6am! It’s always great to play in front of a home crowd anyway but the vibe was so hyper and everyone just wanted to party. If Cream is even half as good, it’ll be superb!
WHATS THE MOST MEMORABLE DJ SET YOU HAVE EVER DONE? Together it would have to be when Sexy Chocolate took over room 2 at Turnmills for City Loud. The Sexy Chocolate crew got their grooving shoes on and made the trek to the big smoke to support us and boy did they show how Folkestone does it! We made lots of new friends that night too, such was the vibe that we brought with us - it was almost like playing at home anyway! As individual DJ’s both of us are so old and travelled that it’s quite difficult to pin one particular gig down - but we’ll try! Stuart: “For me it was in Malta at a fantastic venue named Axis. It was rammed with 3,000 of Europe’s finest dancin’ their butts off all night and was full of different nationalities - the real house music ethic. It was a bit like Village People only more groovy!” Jim: “I think mine was one of the gigs I played for Moneypennys in Birmingham - so many people came up with me that we virtually took over the whole floor of the hotel! There’s such a good vibe there and I really fed off the buzz and totally rocked it! It’s either that or New Years Eve 2002 in Lithuania - they’re so open to different styles of house and were on the podiums giving it as soon as the club opened - must be the vodka!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE KENT CLUBBING SCENE?
It’s been crying out for something like this for years. The scene has always been around but not many have been able to capitalize and create an event on a scale like this. There are so many out there who think that clubbing is going to their local ritzy at the weekend but there’s much more fun than that to be had! We’d just like to say thanks to you guys (HD Promotions) for having the balls to put these events together!
HOW DID YOU START DJING?
Well, playing together we started way back in the days of Havin’ It in Bonkers (now called the Beach) on a Sunday night, after which we’d go up to Charlie Chan’s in Walthamstow to groove along with naughty football types and page 3 sorts - nice! Then we progressed to the Love Lounge, Juicy Tunes and then of course Sexy Chocolate. Stuart: “I started DJ’ing at school disco’s (as in disco’s at school!) back when I was much younger and slightly more beautiful. Then I moved on to running my own mobile but specializing in more club oriented sounds. From there it was a short step to raves (such as Reincarnation) and then into clubs.” Jim: “I started in a similar way to Stuart really, playing a real mixture of hip hop, house and soul in a school youth club at all night parties - very risqué! I guess you could say I turned professional (in the loosest sense of the word!) about the time Stuart and I met, back in nineteentwelvtyten or so. I too was much younger, slimmer and better looking then. In fact, I used to be called Slim Jim but that doesn’t really fit now. A bit like my old clothes.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TUNE OF ALL TIME?
This is a bit like the gig question really - very tough! We could name so many. I think we both agree on Finally - Kings of Tomorrow (Original Mix) though. It’s one of those classics that still moves us both. I guess you could also include pretty much anything by Kenny Dope / Louie Vega / Masters at Work (MAW) from the 90’s to date. Stuart: “One of mine would be the original mix of Plastic Dreams - Jaydee; I remember hearing it at MoS way back and being totally struck by it.” Jim: “I think one of mine would have to be Hypnodelic from Francios K’s FK EP; it still does things to me!” Really though, it’s anything that’s got a soul to it - even a deep darkish one from time to time!
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE SEXY CHOCOLATE TEAM ON THE 1st MARCH
