Interview with Afterparty's DJ Doorly ahead of huge Mixmag Event!

Down to Afterparty's continuing success, their next event has seen them be invited to be showcased as part of the MIXMAG 2009 club tour. As OFFICIALLY one of the best club nights in the UK they are one of a select few events given this honor!! And to make it even better they have joined forces with Leeds's Superpowered Techno / Electro promoters - Wax:On. And with a line up including Radio One heavyweights Annie Mac and Kissy Sell Out, you can expect a party to end all others...

In an era when it seems every DJ shows up to gigs carrying something smaller than a kid’s lunchbox, Doorly is the exception to this rule. Using a set up that would make even Zabiela blush (3 CDJs, 2 1210s, EFX unit and Pioneer 800 to be precise), when he says he’s DJing live, he means it. Everything that you hear in is set his being created in the mix, there and then. With energy only comparable to Carl Coxs’ early 3 deck gigs in the rave era, Doorly’s movement behind the decks is relentless, armed with the finest accapellas, instrumentals, bootlegs, edits and re-rubs, he switches between musical genres with ease. Playing a mix of house, breaks, techno and electro, mixed in with ample doses of indie and hip hop, expect the unexpected as it’s all about the party with Doorly. His style may best be classified as an old school block party DJ using new school technology.

With a host of exciting projects underway, and ahead of this massive event in conjunction with Mixmag, there's never been a better time to catch up with Doorly as his star is set to rise even higher in 2009...

Who inspired you the most when you first got involved in the music business?

As a DJ – Morillo massively inspired me technically, when he was on form he literally pioneered the cdj1000’s at a time that I never thought I’d use anything but vinyl.

Are you interested in any other genres of music or is it all about dance for you?

Yes of course, although my sets are fundamentally dance based, I don’t really believe in pigeon holing sounds into genre, I go from hip hop to indie to dnb to dubstep to techno and everything in between. I’m into everything really so I try to express that in my sets (within reason ? )

You’ve played all over from Creamfields to Ibiza, where has been you most memorable gig?

Obviously playing live to the world when I did an essential mix on Radio 1!!! I had the legend “Tongy” warming up for me and an army of local peeps chanting my name!! Bizarre!!

What is your ultimate ambition as a DJ?

Well it has always been to do an essential mix since I first got into dance music so that’s gone, although I’d like to do it again in a few years as a more recognised producer. Club-wise I’m playing nearly everywhere I want to at the moment so it’s all good : )

You run a club event called Afterparty, how did that idea come about?

Three years ago 4 of us, Myself, Domski, Bongo Dave, & Matt Barker were all reasonably successful local DJ’s with good followings in Huddersfield and beyond but we never had chance to all play and party together. So we set up a little afterhours at 100 capacity venue just meant for our mates really but word of mouth spread so quickly that we couldn’t fit everyone in on our opening night! Things grown pretty rapidly from there really.

What factors do you think has contributed to making Afterparty such a success?

I think the main factor is that Afterparty has never been about making money and our crowd appreciate that, it’s always nicer going to a house party type event than a massive corporate cheese fest. None of us are decent businessmen unfortunately but we LOVE to party into the wee small hours! This stands even now, our warehouse events, although pack in thousands of clubbers are our least profitable venture ever and we are yet to make any money from them!! The sheer cost of such a venue and the ridiculous line-ups we put on make it hard, we had a £50,000 break even for our may event!! But we don’t care as long as we don’t lose money, we’ll keep on doing it!!

It has played host to some massive names such as 2manydjs, Jon Carter and Pete Tong, are there any other acts you would like to book in the future?

Add to that list, Groove Armada, Armand Van Helden, Swedish House Mafia, Dave Spoon, Scratch Perverts, Herve, Annie Mac etc all in the last 12 months!!! We’re running out of people to book! We’d love to get Erol Alkan down, he was nearly on the March line up but the dates never worked out in the end. Also I’m looking at doing some live stuff as Huddersfield has never seen it. The likes of Soulwax & SMD would smash the place to bits!!

You have an upcoming collaboration with the Mixmag tour, with a party featuring Annie Mac, what do you have in store for the event?

We’ve had great support from the Mixmag over the last few years so we were over the moon to be part of their 2009 UK tour. We have Annie Mac & Kissy Sell Out headlining which our crowd will be buzzing about as these were both popular demand bookings. I’ve also enlisted the services of the mighty WAX:ON from Leeds who are easily one of the top brands in the UK right now so it’s all looking awesome! We’re running the event at our old DJs-used warehouse venue (Bates Mill) which is always a bit special and its nearly sold out already so we’re in for a bit of a party!!

What do you think to the Mixmag brand and how does it suit your own brand, Afterparty?

Mixmag is always right on the pulse with what the kids want and completely represents the new breed of UK clubbing. Obviously I’m a subscriber and I think that is essential to keep an eye on the industry and see who the hype artists and events are. I like to think that we are one of say 30 major events in the UK who are really trying to push new talent and cool music so the partnership works really well.

What is next for you in 2009?

It’s all pretty busy right now, Since returning from Ibiza in September I’ve had my head down in the studio solidly and my tracks are all about to surface in the next couple of months. I have a remix on Southern Fried that I did for Cagedbaby dropping soon along with a Dubstep remix I did for a band called Man like Me. I am also co-running the new Wax:On record label which launches at the end of April with my 2 track EP and a very strong remix package. A month’s label launch tour will follow throughout May which pretty much hits the best venue in every major city.
Then as that tour finishes I move out to Ibiza for the summer to continue my residency for Ibiza Rocks and this year myself, Mark (from Metropolis) & Dan (from Wax:on) along with the Ibiza rocks / Manumission crew will be co-running a VERY exciting new event which I can guarantee will turn a lot of heads!!! My summer schedule is already so busy that I will be flying from Ibiza to the UK or Europe most weekends for other gigs. And I will also be hosting the weekly Ibiza Rocks podcast show which will launch in a few weeks when the first wave of line ups for the summer are announced so watch out for that too.
