Interview with Blackout ahead of their event with Project 7!!!

This article is about Project 7 @ TOKYO in Huddersfield (UK), Sat 01 Nov 2008

PROJECT 7 is a new and exciting clubbing brand that hit the streets of England in the Summer of 2008. Taking over venues all over England, Project 7’s aim is to put on 7 monster events in 7 different cities and to play the best house and techno from around the World. It will be a night that celebrates ground breaking music and the artists that supply the sounds, a carnival atmosphere to rival that of Ibiza, music to rival that of Berlin and beautiful people enjoying beautiful music. PROJECT 7 is a club night for an educated crowd. The quality of music and entertainment is the priority. Music for a sexy, connected crowd is the ethos. A roster of talented resident’s will bolster the headline acts to ensure a night and atmosphere to remember. Which is why they have enlisted the talents of Leeds night Blackout to help them get the party rocking..

BlackOut runs the 3rd Friday of every month at Club Mission Leeds and is well known for its excellent taste in DJ bookings and underground vibe. With a cool crowd, awesome vibe and varied kinds of top class house blasting from the speakers, this is a night that isn't to be missed, and all this will be coming to Project 7 on the 1st November...we caught up with one of the promoters, Will, to get the lowdown...

1. BlackOut is absolutely storming Leeds at the moment well done, how did it first come about? Did you ever think it would become so successful?

It came about when i took over the then Friday night after hours event at Fibre from 2am til 8am weekly, i literally 'Blacked Out' the windows to make it darker when the sun began to rise... To be honest i never really thought it would move from there.

2. What were you hoping to achieve from the night? What are you aiming to give people?

Our aim is simple.. Bring back friday night clubbing to Leeds.. Recently friday nights in Leeds have dwindled with most of the city's big events being held on a saturday, so we wanted to bring something fresh to the table & throw a big party that people can look forward to, bringing the countries best up & coming talent to Mission @ an affordable price too.

3. Why did you decide to run the night at Mission?

All the normal Friday nights at Mission like Kissdafunk were leaving for the Summer to go to Ibiza etc.. BlackOut at the time had grown and grown and was starting to have a negative effect on the early trade of bar Fibre, people were starting to go to other places then coming to Fibre later on just for BlackOut. So Shaun the owner of Mission and Fibre asked me to run a weekly BlackOut event at Mission over the Summer. It was a huge success, an when all the nights came back we were then offered a new residency on the 3rd Friday of every month.

4. Leeds is pretty unreal for clubbing at the moment, and producing huge talent, is this something you actively trying to involve yourself in?

Yes it is something we would love to be a part in, we are only a very 'young' night at the moment, but in the future it would be good to look back and think we helped someone create a career for them selves.

5. Are your personal music tastes reflected in the night or do you listen to a lot of other genres?

Yes in a big way, although i like a large range of music, this month i am going to see The Streets and Kanye West! It would be wrong to just tie your self to one genre of music...

6. You have some huge acts coming up such as Deadmau5 and Sebastien Leger, how does it feel to have these people playing for your night?

Haha, dont get carried away it would be wrong for me to claim the Deadmau5 World Tour Event on the 25th of October as a BlackOut gig, i am promoting the event with Nick from Cream Ibiza & The Electrik Playground, Eugene from Purrfect Electro, Shaun the owner of Victoria Works and not forgetting Mr Dale Castell. It is amazing and an honour to be hosting the huge second arena and things are going unbelievable well... tickets are literally flying out day by day, i really do think this will be one special night!

I feel very lucky as a promoter to get the opportunity to get to work with this calibre of DJ and with some amazing promoters. It is fantastic that BlackOut is getting associated with the event.

7. Your involved in an upcoming event called Project 7, can you tell us more about this?

I met two guys in Ibiza and they didn't seem to leave me alone, they keep appearing everywhere i go and stalking me on Facebook... next thing i know i am signed up to do Project 7!!!

Jokes aside, Its a big after hours event in @ Tokyo's in Huddersfield. with our selves, Habit, Asylum, and mono_clut. I am really looking forward to it and it will be good to take BlackOut back to its original after hours format. I have been told early bird tickets sold out in less than two days and have already heard people from Leeds talking about travelling over for the event! Its a pleasure to be involved with and i sure it is going to be a sell out.

Not only that the Project 7 antics will be continuing as they come along to host our second room at Mission on the 21st of November!

8. What is BlackOut going to bring to the event?

A. We will be bringing our trademark Nu-Skool & Big Bassline Electro House sound to the main room arena! Main resident & co. promoter Dale Castell will be headlining with support from BlackOut regular Mark Crampton. There is a wide variety of genre's of music to be heard @ Project 7 with no arena / brand alike so it's set to be a massive mash-up of electronic sounds of which we are very much looking forward to.

9. And where does the future lie for BlackOut? What is the ultimate goal?...

Who knows!!! the ultimate goal is to create amazing parties with an underground vibe... a place people enjoy to go... and get a little bit messy at the same time!
