News from were the rumour has started:
The west indian centre have plans afoot for a brand new purpose built event room, using the car park for the new venue. There will be a new gig room, new bar area, new toilets/changing room and new entrance into the new event arena, plans also include and a covered out door smoking area in the plans. they are but plans on paper at the moment. Exciting though?!

Funding is been sought for this mulit-million pound extension and it's all looking likely to happen,

The work will not happen in 2010. When the work does happend it should not affect events at the WIC during the process of the new build.


the current facts are:
- they want to expand, & have done for several years. (to enable event gigs to happen, whilst still having a room for community activity)
- they do not have the money as yet
- they are applying for £1.5million on a (60% grant 40% loan)
- they do not have planning consent - as yet
- they have architect plans drawn up, and they look good.
- they will use the current hard standing areas of the car park and the area between the carpark and house/chill room.
- the intention to make the new building and then link to the current house/chill room and make them a totally self-contained event/gig space.
- this will happen sometime in the future, unlikely to be in the very very near future.
- attendees of events will know well in advance of any potential closure period.
- subdub / riffraff dates are fully confirmed for 2010 upto nye 10/11

- this is the closest the WIC have been to making this happen. New monies/grant funding are coming into the area and WIC have the best chance to get a portion of it. It does require them to take out a serious loan (40% of £1.5m!)

details are:
new build main room on the carpark (new gig room with own entrance), approx 1.5x bigger than current main room.
linking into the current 2nd room (i.e. chilout/house rm),
with a covered outdoor smoking area,
New bar area/room

Facilities include: stage, bar, new changing rooms, artist green room, new toilets.

This will make a new venue offering two rooms for events (exisiting house/chill room + new building linked together with an outside smoking courtyard area).

The current main room will then be used for community fucntions only.
