Interview with Morgan aka Groove-Tek....

the futures bright, the futures MORGAN.

Fast rising hard dance and house star Morgan, aka Groove-Tek, has had his best year to date in 2006 and for 2007 playing for GoodGreef, Sundissential, wildchild, frantic, tidy, pollysexual to name a few and with the big beef reunion & sankeys on nyd he is tipped for even bigger things in 07.

It’s looking promising that he will be awarded best newcomer in the Hard Dance Awards 2007 which would be perfect for the Manchester bred DJ.
With the relaunch of his night “Toast” in November, new weekly residency at Sankeys night “Bitch” and the change of name for his house gigs we thought it was about time we got to know the guy better…..

Where were you born?

Sunny Mad-Chester tis a wicked place, seems that everyone’s got a real sense of identity and proud ness from coming from here. Like any place it has its ups n downs but mostly its fine. And of course the music that comes from this area has shaped many sounds and sceans through out time so it’s the perfect place to be a musician in so many different vibes all over. All you have to do is walk down the main strip on a Saturday afternoon to see the varity of buskers that are about from rappers to blues to hip hop to mc’s, theres this wicked blind guy who plays guitar there hes out of this world could stand n watch him for hours n often do.

Have you always been musically influenced?

All my life, I studied popular music at collage then went on to university to study new music and media so it was inevitable that I was going to make a career out of music in some shape or form. Ive played guitar since I was 15 and used to be in a band. Its wasn’t until I got to university that I started learning how to mix & the rest as they say is history.

Describe your style at the moment, and what your hoping to achieve?.

It depends what time im playing at what the promoter wants to be honest. For a warm up hard set im really in to the funkier side of hard dance through to bubbling hard house for peek time love BK’s riot label think there producing some amazing stuff at the mo. On the house side of things im really in to dc10 style minimal & electro gotta love those random dirty bass lines.

Do you plan out your sets or do you play to the crowds reaction?

I have an idea of what im going to be playing going off what ive been sent that week. I always try to keep my sets as fresh as possible by pushing new boundaries and sounds. But reading the crowd is defiantly an essensal part of djing if I notice that something works il continue down that route. Each event and crowd is different I love the challenge of playing some ware new and learning what the crowd want its all part of the fun. I always try to get the crowd involved by interacting and basically enjoying the music as mush as they are. If there’s space to climb on the dex im there lol!

As a producer, what are you currently working on? (style, feel etc), and what should we be keeping our eyes peeled for?

Ive always been about pushing new sounds so il be continuing in the same vain. On the hard dance tip Il have a few things lined up on the funkyier side of things im loveing this sound at the moment and it seems to being going down a treat on the dance floors. Got some nice collabs coming up including Sam Towned and have booked time with my fav engineers Maddox & col barratt. On the house vibe im looking to be producing some real dirty minimal think loco-dice, booka-shade sort of stuff. I would love to hear one of these tracks being played at dc10 & space next summer in Ibiza, so fingers crossed

What do you feel is the best work you have produced?

There’s been a few im really proud of my fav’s are probably Yo Sushi & the Rat that I collaborated on with Tim Clewz on they got signed straight away to glazbys label Neonate which I was over the moon about. Also Electro creep is a fav of mine on My own label toasted recordings has a really different feel to it and got a great reaction from DJs in the scean. I really enjoy going in the studio and have worked with some wicked engineers including Maddox, Barratt, Chris Hoff, to name a few. At the moment I really looking forward to start to make some minimal electro tracks going in with different engineers in that field of dance music.

Your record collection is on fire. You only have time to save one track. So wipe away the tears. And lets hear you choice?

Oooooooooo nightmare its so hard but I recon it would have to be an eletro/techno track by Lostep called ‘Because we can’ tis the dirtest track ive ever heard and the production is out of this world absolutely love it!

What inspired you to change your name to "Groove-tek" for your house/electro gigs?

Since gaining my ressidencys at Sankeys and disco slut I felt it was time to separate my self from Hard house when I play minimal & electro unfortunately harddance is sort of frowned apon in these circles and I wanted to establish my self not only as a harddance dj but also as an house DJ in my own right with out causeing any confusion. I love both sceans equally and want to make it in both so I felt changing my name was the right thing to do in order to do this.

Your fan base seems to have vastly improved over the last couple of months, what do you put this down to?

Its down to a lot of hard work promoting my self on websites esspesaly dsi! Since staring my own group on dsi its been a wicked way to get in touch with everyone on a personal basis. im proud to say were nearly at the 500 members mark which is fantastic. Its gives me the opportunity to offer free downloads of my tracks & mixes and let people know ware il be playing each weekend and its defiantly paid off, but most of all ive meet some really top people and gained a lot of new friends from this. Gotta say dsi is the best website out there at the moment il be surprised if it doesn’t get an award at this years harddance awards.

If you had to choose between playing electro and hard house what would it be and why?

I honestly couldn’t give a straight answer to this one I love playing both, I love harddance for its pure energy and electro and minimal for its down right sexy dirtiness

What do you find has a better crowd and why, hard house events or electro events?

Both crowds are wicked. Dead friendly and really in to the music I love meeting everyone after my sets and have made loads of friends from it.

what are you most looking forward to about playing at Goodgreef at Manchester Academy next month?

Coming from Manchester playing the academy is a good as it gets really so I was absolutely over the moon when I got the call that I was playing. On another plus side il be going b2b with my homie Sam townend me and sam have always had the same ideas of pushing new sounds rather than copying current trends so expect a phat funky warm up set from us its defiantly gonna rock. Also my self and sam will be hooking up in the studio over the next few months so look out for some tracks from us in the very near future.

What do you think will be the key to Toast being a success again next month, as the new official GGNW after party?

Its great to be promoting again although ive got to say I forgot what a stressful job it is. We always put 110% in to our toast events so you can expect some phat line ups in the near future. Being the goodgreef after party you can guarantee that the crowd will be full of proper clubbers wanting to carry on the madness from the main event. Cant wait for the next one in december
Why does so much heat come off your head, when clearly it must be the coldest part of your body because its bald?!
